Bruce was born in Cambridge, MA on September 16, 1927 to his parents, John and Olive Ayer. He grew up in Weston, MA and graduated from St. Marks School in Southboro, MA. He served proudly in the United States Army Air Force, stationed in Germany during World War 2. He married Marilyn Cardwell Ayer in 1951. In 1961 he founded Ayer Sales, an industrial plastics supply distributor. While living in Stow, MA, he served as Selectman for 12 years and a founding member of Plantation Apartments, Stow’s Housing for the elderly. He retired at age 70, to East Orleans, MA, where again he became involved in the community by serving on several committees including the Friends of the Fourth as chairman. He was a private pilot and a longtime member of the Orleans Yacht Club.
Bruce is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 65 years, his sons Jay, his wife Arlan Wise; Mark, his partner, Brigitte Robertson; David, his wife Linda and Peter, his wife Colleen. He has seven grandchildren, Jason, Amy, Jack, Grace, Jordan, Sophie and Catherine and a great grandchild Knox. He is also survived by his brother Alexander and his wife Alison.
