Bart was husband of 55 years to the late Marilyn Mortimer DeRizzo. Father to Steve (Cathy) DeRizzo of Port Charlotte, FL and Christopher (Barbara) DeRizzo of Wilton, NY/Brewster, MA. He was predeceased by his son Matthew who passed in 2006. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Angela Brown (Andrew), Jeremy DeRizzo, Heather Stoehr (Justin) and Jack, Luke and Charlie DeRizzo. His brother Pat DeRizzo (Carol) of Palm City, FL. He also leaves behind several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and his other “daughter”, Karen Coleman.
Bart was born in 1931 in Gloversville, NY to the late Vincent and Nellie DeRizzo. He graduated from Gloversville High School and soon after was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean War. Afterward, Bart returned to Gloversville, wed Marilyn and continued his education, earning his degree in Computer Science at University of NY at Albany. He then embarked on a 35 year career with General Electric. He was at the forefront of computer programming and worked in systems software design and management, while he and Marilyn raised their three boys in Rotterdam, NY. They loved camping in their RV in Lake George, Maine, New Hampshire and Cape Cod. Bart enjoyed spending time at the Rotterdam Elks, and is a lifetime member.
In 1992 Bart and Marilyn moved full time to Brewster, MA. Bart stayed by Marilyn’s side traveling back and forth to Boston to battle her health issues. He spent his time at the beach, walking, biking, clamming and enjoying the Cape.
Bart lived his life simply but was extremely generous to those he was close to. He was a lifetime sports fan, both watching and playing. In his younger years he played basketball and baseball. He continued to play softball in his twilight years with the Cape Cod senior league.
What brought “Pop/Papa”, as he was affectionately known, the most joy was his grandsons. Spending summers at the Cape, Barb and the boys formed a close bond. Papa was always transporting them to lessons, watching them play sports, riding bikes and taking them to their favorite eateries. Never one to shy away from technology, no matter how far, they were always a FaceTime away. Although we were extremely blessed to have him with us for 91 years, it was just, not long enough.
Special thanks to his Laurinos family, Amy Murphy, the Morans and his caregivers at Cape Cod Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
A visiting hour will be held from 10a-11a on Monday, Oct. 10th at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA. A prayer service will begin at 11am in the funeral home. Burial to follow in Brewster Memorial Cemetery.
