Rel was born to Joseph and Victoria Thomas on March 22, 1938, on the beautiful island of Tortola, BVI. Joseph and Miss Vicky had a large family with 12 children, which by today’s standards would be considered a large family.
Rel went to school in King Garden Bay, Tortola and at age 18 he met my mom Joannah “Joan” Nibbs. She was young and beautiful, and he was a smooth saxophone playing musician. He played his way into winning her heart and eventually moved to St Thomas. They got married on September 1, 1965, and this loving union produced 6 children - Jerry, Selwyn, Lee, Cyril, Vern and Joann.
Rel is known for his Love of God, family and music. He was faithful, committed and lived the life that was an example of what a Man should strive for. When his son Selwyn got sick at a young age, Rel’s love for him did not waver. Rel was faithfully married to Joannah for 49 years and loved her unconditionally. He was a positive example to all of his children and raised them to be the successful men and women they are today.
Rel made sure his family put God first and attended church together on Sundays. He would strongly encourage education and express that hard work while staying faithful can make anything attainable. His mentorship resulted in all his children becoming successful entrepreneurs. He was always present in their lives and was very proud of all his children.
Rel was a faithful member of the St Mark AME Church East Campus. He would always enjoy his time playing music with the band and look forward to his Bible study.
On November 5, 2023, after a full and rich life, Rel succumbed to his illness. But seeing so many people here to say goodbye to Rel today, shows just how loved he was and how much he will be missed.
A visitation at 10:00 AM and funeral service between 11:00AM-12:00PM will be held on Saturday, November 18th, at Saint Mark AME Church – MAIN Campus, 1968 Bruton Boulevard, Orlando, FL 32805. Followed by a burial at Chapel Hill Cemetery, 2400 Harrell Road, Orlando, FL 32817 at 12:30PM.
