Born in Kankakee, Illinois to Dr. Norberto Pedraja Ortiz and Sandra Blandy Pedraja Ortiz, he was lovingly known as “Butch”, a sweet and silly child. Later to be known as "Bert", he was an incredibly hardworking, selfless, family man. His sisters Cecelia and Becky remember him starting work at a young age while enjoying playing many sports. His love for the Cubs began in his youth as he and his family would take trips to Wrigley Field.
Bert graduated from Governors State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and later earned his MBA from Olivet Nazarene. Bert started his career in 1987 with the Chicago Tribune and the The Tribune Company later relocated him to Central Florida, naming him Vice President of Circulation and Consumer Marketing for the Orlando Sentinel, the position that he retired from nearly 35 years later. Bert took an immense amount of pride in not only his work but in the relationships he built with his coworkers. As a leader, he was always in support of his employee’s career goals and as a friend, he was understanding of their personal lives and always encouraged that family come first. To this day, he is regarded by those he worked with as the most selfless and remarkable person.
In addition to his work, he was a dedicated volunteer for Salvation Army, an avid supporter and volunteer for Be the Match and Pet Rescue by Judy. He had a love for travel and adventure and made incredible memories biking in Spain and exploring Europe with his longtime girlfriend, Betsy.
Above all else, Bert was a family man and took so much pride in his children and his grandchildren. Lovingly referred to as “Grandpa B”, he lived to spoil, guide and pour love into his three grandchildren, Keegan, Annabelle and Grayson. He was the most loving and supportive father to Eric, Jordan, Zach and daughter in law, Vanessa. He taught them to “fight for your family” because he loved his family so deeply.
He fought for his health for many years so that he could give the gift of more time to his children and those he loved. In his passing, the stories and tributes that have been shared have made it abundantly clear that Bert was an inspiration and friend to all. There are no doubts his legacy will be carried on through all who loved him.
The Ortiz family invites you to celebrate the life of Bert Ortiz. Celebration will begin at 1:00pm on Sunday October 29th and end at 4:00pm. We invite all to share memories and stories with an informal service starting at 3:00pm. Appetizers will be served alongside a cash bar.
