Marie R. Lindsey

Marie Rose Lococo Lindsey was born on November 5, 1930 in Frankfort, Kentucky to Esther and Vincent Lococo. She was the third of four children, who included David, Patricia, Marie and Joseph. Marie grew up down the street from the state capitol of Kentucky. She started elementary school early at the age of four. Marie graduated from Good Shepherd Catholic High School in 1947 at the age of 16. She was a cheerleader and played her favorite Saint, Bernadette, in the school play. Marie had two best friends from childhood, Connie and Rita. They called themselves Witch 1, Witch 2 and Witch 3. During high school, in Shakespeare's play, Macbeth, Connie played the role of First Witch, Rita played the role of the Second Witch and Marie played the role of the Third Witch. The three witches stirred the caldron in the play, and stirred up a lot of fun in life over the next 75 years ! Her parents owned a grocery store and later switched to a liquor store. They owned two stores, and were entrepreneurs living the American dream. Her father immigrated from Porticello, Sicily at age 15. Her father did not speak Italian in the house because he said, "We're in America now, so we speak English in this house." After graduating high school, Marie and her family moved to Miami, Florida for her father's health. She attended Barry College in Miami where she met her lifelong friend Biby Bonet Real from Havana, Cuba. Marie always fondly recalled her pre-Castro regime trip to Biby's home in Havana. Her graduation from college would have to wait 30 years because she met her husband, William "Bill" L. Lindsey, Jr. at her sister Pat's wedding in January 1950. Bill and Marie were married in Miami Beach, Florida at St. Patrick's Church on June 15, 1950, just 6 months later. The newlyweds moved to Danville, Kentucky where Carol was born on April 17, 1951, followed by Nancy, the summer after in 1952. In 1953, the young family moved to Hialeah, Florida where they purchased their first home. Their third daughter, Valerie, was born in 1956. Next the family moved to Lake Worth, Florida, where daughter number four, Rosemary was born in 1961. In 1963, the family moved to Orlando, Florida, where their fifth daughter, Anne-Marie was born. No matter where they lived, Marie was always active in her church serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. She also enjoyed participating with her husband in a small group home Bible studies. In addition, she was always active in social organizations such as the Women's Club, the DOES, and Welcome Wagon. In the DOES, she served as Outer Guard, First Counselor and Historian for the 2006 State Meeting. Marie went back to college when her two youngest daughters were in high school. She graduated from Memphis State University with a Bachelor's of Professional Studies in 1979, and she obtained her Master's Degree in 1980, also from MSU. She worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor for Easter Seals for a couple of years before deciding that she enjoyed being a Homemaker more. Marie and Bill traveled extensively over their 67 years of marriage. They enjoyed numerous ocean cruises, river cruises, traveled all over Europe, Asia, Mexico, Canada, Egypt, Israel and of course, Sicily, Italy. For most of her life she said her favorite place in the world was Rome and the Vatican. That was until she traveled to China. In her later years, she said China was her favorite trip (although the food wasn't much to her liking!). Marie Lindsey was born into eternal life on November 20, 2017. She is survived by her loving husband Bill; daughters, Carol Barnett (Tony), Nancy Swartz (Jerry), Rosemary Tolbert (Dennis), and Anne-Marie Bowen (Hugh); son-in-law, Keith Melvin (Dawn); grandchildren, Angela Melvin, Lisa Melvin Harder, Brennan Melvin, Michelle tolbert Carpenter (Dustin), David Tolbert, Luke Tolbert, Rachel Tolbert, Alexander Bowen; and great-grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Harder, and Nora Grace and A.J. Carpenter. She is preceded in death by her parents Esther and Vincent Lococo, her sister Patricia Russo, brother, Joseph Lococo and daughter Valerie Melvin.
