He grew up during the depression and had stories about those days. He graduated from Cuyahoga Falls high school in 1944 and within two weeks he was drafted into the army. He was sent to the Pacific as a field medic and was in a number of battles from Manila, Philippines to Japan. After the war he worked for Goodyear Tire Company, Akron, Ohio.
John married his high school sweetheart, Helen Czuha in 1949. He worked as a pipe layer at the East Ohio Gas Company. Helen and John would pack the car with suitcases and two siblings and drive to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida many times. In 1982, after 34 years at East Ohio, he took an early retirement as the Construction and Maintenance Supervisor. He was happy to relocate to Florida.
He enjoyed bowling leagues, square dancing and striking up conversations with anyone. He taught his son how to shoot craps and the pair would go to casinos everywhere. His pride and joy were his three grandsons and great granddaughter.
John Herbert is survived by Helen Herbert, daughter Carol, son John, three grandsons and great granddaughter.
May he rest in peace.
