James graduated from Boone High School, in Orlando, Florida. He then served in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon, Georgia and later in the Florida National Guard. He worked in many positions at the Orlando Sentinel for 48 years, before retiring as an Ad Composition Pre-press Manager.
James loved fishing, especially deep-sea fishing, as well as kayaking, canoeing, and all sorts of outdoor activities involving nature and animals. He enjoyed all types of music, was an avid reader, and history buff. He was a Florida Gators football and Orlando Magic fan. He most enjoyed visiting with family and friends, poker nights, cooking, classic tv shows, movies, and radio programs.
He was loved and respected by many, his witty intellect and sharp humor will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Velma Pulliam; brothers, Howard Dowdy and Terry (Terrance) Dowdy; and grandson, Damion Dowdy.
He is survived by daughter, Karen Dowdy; son, Jeff Dowdy (and wife Alicia Dowdy); sisters, Mae Materne and Cathy Stone; brothers, Marion Harrell, John David Harrell, and Ricky Harrell; granddaughter, Hope Dowdy; as well as various nieces and nephews.
Services have been entrusted to Baldwin Fairchild in Orlando, Florida. A Memorial Celebration of James’ life will take place on November 10, 2024 from 3-5 pm.
