Betty Jane Nutter

Betty Jane Marston Nutter, age 92, of Winter Park, Florida, passed away on June 28, 2021. Betty was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her mother passed away when she was just six years old, which affected her deeply throughout her life. It set the course for her lifelong soft spot for underdogs and those who needed love.

Betty met Robert E. Nutter, an Army soldier, at a USO dance in California when she was just 19 years old. They married in December of 1948 and raised four children together. Betty liked the military life, despite the frequent moves and the times when Robert would be on TDY assignments away from home. They were married for almost 68 years when Robert passed in 2016. Since Robert’s death, Betty has missed him every day.

As Betty’s memory began to fail, her granddaughter, Sydney, began visiting her every day helping her with shopping, household chores, and medical appointments. Eventually, her youngest son, Raymond, moved in with her. He and Sydney took loving care of her for the rest of her life.

Betty was a strong woman. The family often said she could “take a licking and keep on ticking”. Well into her 80’s, she was still climbing a ladder up to the roof to put up a lighted Christmas angel. One time in her 70’s, she fell off that ladder flat onto her back and walked away with just bruises. She also continued to mow her own lawn until her sons removed a mower part so she would have to allow them to do it.

Betty was very independent and fiercely loyal to her family. She helped raise her oldest grandson and was very involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She never refused a request for help from anyone. She took care of others her entire life.

Betty had many interests and hobbies when she was young. She was very talented in needlepoint and crochet, and made afghans for every member of the family, which became treasured family heirlooms. She loved sewing as well and could make most anything on her sewing machine. She also enjoyed playing slots at area casinos and frequently won. Betty, Robert, and their longtime friends, Bill and Marilyn Chilton often went to casinos together and to Jai Lai as well. Betty also enjoyed bowling and was on a women’s league. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She also very much loved her dogs, Mo Mo and Cinsy.

Betty died at home, as she had always hoped to be able to do. She is survived by four children: Sandra Friedman, Susan Slovak (Kenneth), Robert E. Nutter Jr. (Donata), Raymond Nutter; four grandchildren: Sasha Friedman, Christopher Nutter (Lindsey), Sydney Windsor, Trey Windsor; and two great grandchildren: Caleb Nutter and Bentley Wynn. She was the center of the Nutter family and will be greatly missed.
