Betty Ann Brookins, born on August 17, 1954 to the late Tommy Brookins and Annie
Brookins. She was born at Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, FL and was the oldest
of five siblings. She attended Brevard County schools and graduated from Cocoa
High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from South Carolina State, and a
Master’s Degree from the University of Central Florida. On July 30, 1977, Neely
and Betty joined in union as one and were married for 45 years. Betty was always a
very determined and a confident person who believed in herself and always had a
positive attitude. Her decisiveness and self-discipline helped build a strong and solid
personality. She graduated from Cocoa High School in 1972. Betty earned her
bachelor’s degree in Home Economics in June of 1976. She was hired as a Home
Economics teacher at her alma mater Cocoa High School for her first teaching job.
She earned a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from the University
of Central Florida in 1982. Betty’s first administrative position was Dean of students
at Johnson Junior High; 1982-1985. She later became Assistant Principal at Stone
Junior High, 1985-1990. Betty worked hard and learned a lot over the years and
later was promoted to Principal of Stone Junior High, where she served from
1990-2000, She was promoted to Director of Student Services ESF from 2001-2002,
before becoming Assistant Superintendent of Student Services from 2002 until she
retired in 2010.
Betty leaves to cherish her memories, her loving and steadfast husband Neely, her
son Courtney, her mother Annie Brookins, her mother-in-law Susie Dunn, and her
aunt Lula Ruth King. Her siblings’ Peggy Brookins, Tommy Brookins, Jr., the late
Jeffery Brookins, and Sylvia Gardiner. Her in-laws Reginald Dunn, Treasure Harris,
Tyrone Dunn, Rosaline Ramsey, and Kenny Dunn. She will be greatly missed by her
nieces and nephews Tamara Brookins, Trevor Harris, LaToya Silvera, Miya Gardiner,
Calea Brookins, Corrine Edmonds, and Cory Toomer. She will also be missed by her
cousins, great-nieces and great nephews, her sisterhood of friends, life- long friends
and a host of others around the community.
