Berta Obdulia Vazquez, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator, and devout Christian, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023, in Orlando, Florida. Born on September 5, 1939, in Camaguey, Cuba, she was the second daughter of the late Miguel Socarras Estrada and Blanca Flor Aviles, and sister to the late Elvira Socarras.
Preceded in death by her loving husband, Angel Vazquez, Berta is survived by her cherished daughters, Maria de los Angeles (Mary), married to Jorge Parra, and Marinella (Nelly), married to Raul Castromán. She leaves behind a legacy through her grandsons Joshua and Jeremy Parra, Jason and Jonovan Castromán, and her great-grandsons Nathanael and Ethan Parra, Jacob and Brandon Castromán. Berta also leaves behind her sister, Zenaida Socarras, who will remember her fondly. As a matriarch, Berta brought love, grace, and wisdom to her family.

In 1971, seeking freedom, she left Cuba for Santander, Spain, before migrating to the United States in March 1973. A few years later, she was proud to claim her U.S. citizenship.
Berta's contributions to education were remarkable. In 1978, she received her Master's degree in Education from Florida International University.
