Thomas A. Akin

Thomas Akin of Palos Heights, IL went home to our Lord, August 27, 2021. Tom was born in Chicago to William and Charlotte Akin. He grew up with his brothers Bill and Wayne in Oak Lawn, where he met his high school sweetheart, Jamy, who he married in 1967, where they then raised their 2 children. Tom served 2 years in the Army in Germany during the Vietnam War, came home and worked for Illinois Bell/Ameritech for 32 years where he was admired by many as a dedicated hard worker. He loved his job and loved to work. He was a jack of all trades, a "MacGyver" you could say. There wasn't anything he couldn't do, fix or make. He made everything "Akin strong" and was always level. If you needed anything Tom was there.

He'd help anyone,anytime. His love for conversation and kindness to strangers lives on through

his son Jim and grandson.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Jamy, his daughter Geanine (Bryan) VanDyck, his son James (Susan) Akin, his grandsons James (Dolly) and Thomas VanDyck, his granddaughters Emma and Alora Akin, and his great grandchildren Theodore and Olive VanDyck. Tom loved God, his family, and his country. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, camping, biking, summers with his grandchildren, talking and his dog Scruffy. Tom would talk to anyone and always ran into someone he knew. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held Friday September 10 from 3 PM to 8 PM at Orland Funeral Home 9900 W. 143rd. St., Orland Park. Family and friends will meet Saturday September 11 at 9:30 AM for the Mass of Christian Burial at Incarnation Catholic Church 5757 W. 127th. St., Crestwood. Interment will take place in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL on Monday September 13 at 10:30 AM. For more information please call (708) 460-7500.
