It's with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard Elias Etlinger. He died peacefully at home, with his family by his side, on Friday, December 6, 2024. Beloved husband to Fannie (nee Kachos) Etlinger; loving father of Thomas and Megan Etlinger; dear brother of Joseph (Susan) Etlinger and the late Stephen Etlinger; brother in law to George (the late Janet) Kachos and John Kachos; fond uncle to Ari (Amanda) Etlinger, Benjamin (Stacey) Etlinger, Matthew Etlinger, Sheila (Joe) Guinta, Stephanie Kachos, Don Carlos, the late Michael (Mary) Carlos, and Anthony (Marisol) Carlos. Great uncle, cousin and friend to many.
Leonard received his undergraduate degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his PHD from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale. He spent most of his career working at Chicago State University as a Professor, then the Dean of Continuing Education, and retired 27 years later as a Vice President. He then went on to become the Director of Grants and Contracts at the City Colleges of Chicago.
Leonard was a published author, and frequently contributed to the Chicago Tribune. He had a black belt in Judo and loved playing racquetball and tennis. He was intrigued by gadgets and technology and was an avid science fiction reader. Len cherished his time exploring places including England, Greece, Russia, Canada, and all over the US. He also barbequed a mean turkey.
Leonard had an impact on many lives throughout his career, and truly valued his family and friendships. He was a generous and unique soul, and the best father and husband. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held on Friday, December 20th 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Orland Funeral Home, 9900 W. 143rd St., Orland Park, IL. The funeral will be Saturday, December 21st at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 2701 N. Sheffield Ave. Chicago, with a visitation at 9:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 9:30 a.m. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, River Grove, IL.
