He was my econ teacher the summer going into sophomore year and me being as nervous as I was to leave the freshman center, he made sure to remind me that he would be at east to help me get used to the building. He said hi everyday when I saw him and even remembered my name junior year even though we hadn’t talked for over a year. Even though he was getting used to being a gym teacher last semester, he was definitely someone who allowed everyone to make class fun in their own way. He truly put a smile on my face whenever I saw him. RIP Coners ❤️

Our Deepest Condolences. Truly a shock!! Remembering working on Johns fathers Nephews Deck...It was a deck that seemed never ending. John Jr. came in tough like his father and we really made that deck Beautiful. He was a great kid watching him grow. Raised well from hard working parents. Again, my deepest condolences. You were truly an amazing friend to have. We shared so memories on Task Force, working summer school, doing activties/coaching, and being friends outside of work. Ill never forget making giant copy packets for summer school, and playing golf after summer school (even in the rain wearing dress pants and shoes haha). You were so kind and always willing to help others. This included helping me move in 100 degree heat in the middle of summer. Im so glad you came to my wedding and we got to share that memory together. Im glad you stopped by not too long ago and got to spend the evening together and I really wish I could've gone out when you asked me a few weeks ago. You even said you were willing to help me move again in September. You had such a great spirit and personality that just positively affected those around you. You made an impact on me and so many others. You were a great friend, and i'm really gonna miss you man and know ill see you again one day.  My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends, and words cannot express the sympathy I have for your loved ones.  and everyone you have made such a positive  impact on.

My heart broke when I heard the news of John's passing. John, aka Dr. Coners, and I worked together at LTHS, but we were more than co-workers, he was my friend. John was a hard-working, thoughtful, funny, caring guy who could always put a smile on my face even on a bad day. When John visited Germany, he remembered the story about how I used to have a shot glass from there that my brother gave me years ago. In true John fashion, he brought me back a replacement from his trip. I consider myself blessed to have known such a kind soul and I will cherish our many memories and think of him fondly. I hope your family can find some comfort in your memories and knowing he touched the lives of so many in such a positive way. He will truly be missed. Rest easy my friend, until we meet again.

I was fortunate to meet John through my husband at a wedding. John was so full of energy and loved dancing the entire night.  I instantly loved the kid for his happiness and personality.  I had just told him a few weeks ago to come over to swim and hangout since it had been a few years. I am completely heartbroken and send my condolences to your family <3

John was a beautiful person inside and out. John worked for us doing dinojumps.... he always had a smile on his face and was dependable. He was always on time and did a great job. My son was so excited to have John as his ROTC sub this past year. My son said it was the best semester of highschool he had. He said that John had incorporated fitness and fun nto their routine. He said John was a teacher he felt comfortable going to if he had any issues. It was so nice to meet John at Senior Night. I understood why my son thought he was an amazing teacher. How blessed my son was to have had the opportunity to be his student. 

John is in most of my favorite memories from high school.  I wish I had gotten to know him sooner, but was lucky enough to  have classes with him and call him my friend senior year. Some of my favorite memories include him blowing up a bouncy castle for Elena and I and hanging out at the zoo the day after prom. He made me laugh every time I was with him. After high school we checked in on each other now and then.  The last time we spoke he congratulated me on my marriage and we talked about our careers. He told me that he loved teaching. I joked about how we were getting old and he replied “haha we’re not that old...”.  He was right, we weren’t that old.  I know if he was here right now he would be telling us not to be sad and continue to live our lives to the fullest. John thank you for being in my life. I will carry the lessons I learned from you with me always.  My deepest condolences to his family, students and friends. 

I knew Mr. Coners because he was my substitute teacher often and for a while semester in history. I was going through a really hard time and he understood and helped me get the school work done. Everyday I saw him in the hallway we said hi to each other. He truly had a positive impact on the lives of many including mine and he will be greatly missed. 

During freshman year, my original homeroom teacher left for the rest of the school year. We had a sub fill in and that was Mr. Coners. He is one of those teachers you will always remember. Even though I only had him one year, he always made sure to say hello to me to me the hallways. You’d always see him making students smile. So many students were thankful to get the chance to know you, including me.

It was truly heartbreaking to hear of the sudden passing of John.  My family had the pleasure of knowing John through his time with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.  It was a joy to watch this kind hearted young boy grow into a kind hearted and thoughtful man.  He left this world much too soon.  My thoughts and prayers are with you John and Mary, and Jennifer and Jaclyn.  Your son and brother touched so many lives, and he will be missed by all he knew.

I had the pleasure of knowing John for the last 13 years. My favorite memories of him include us working together, going to Cubs games, and fishing for bass. John had some of the best morals a man could have. He also had a very calming presence that I loved to be around. I could tell him anything and know that he wouldn't judge me, which was my favorite quality about John. I'll never drink another spotted cow without thinking about my good humored, fun loving, pure of heart friend Johnny C. Cheers brother, Go Cubbies.

I remember every Ransburg summer camp.  Our first one was especily memorable:
Tropical Hot, Tornado,  Thunderstorms, good times, always.
Young John was Always so good natured and easy-going. Just like his parents. John Sr. and I spoke often about the boys (sisters and family, too).
I'm broken hearted. I know "both John's" would have us smile and "Hike On."
We're out of state. Colin will try to be there.

Mr. Coners was truly an awesome teacher that will  definitely be missed.  We talked about history and sports. Mr Coners was like a friend to me and I wish his family my condolences. I was very shocked to hear this sad news. He was such an awesome guy I have no more words. He lead ROTC for one semester and was a coach to various  sports. Rest easy Mr.Coners ill see you soon in the afterlife 💓

Mr. C took over the Sociology class I was in. Him and I grew incredibly close and he would  always have the biggest smile on his face when he would begin the class each morning. I could tell he loved being an educator and working with kids. Every day, he would ask how was my day and genuinely be interested in what I had to say. We would joke around, but if he saw that I was struggling, he would pull up a chair and point out to me what I didn’t understand. No matter how many times he had to repeat it to me, he was patient, kind, and wouldn’t leave until I grasped the concept down. A true example of what a great educator should be. He was a good friend to me during the entire time was in LTHS. I pray to god his family takes good care of themselves, and they know how much of a positive impact their son/loved one had on students. 

Coach Coners had such an amazing personality. As the assistant coach of the Lockport softball team he made my freshman season something to remember. With his jokes and positive attitude he always put a smile on every single player’s face. Getting on first base was always a great time with coach Coners. There was never a dull moment on the team. Rest easy coach.<3

Even though Mr. Coners was a substitute for ROTC for only a semester he made a huge impact and made my sophomore year amazing because he always made my days better by making me laugh and happy with his jokes. And when it came to the drill team he was always very supportive of us even we didn't do good. Rest well Mr. Coners.

Mr. Coners was my world studies teacher for the first half of my freshman year. All I remember from that class is having a lot of laughs, he always made class so fun. He was the type of teacher that made you want to come to school. My favorite thing about Mr. Coners was that two years later, even though I only had him for one semester, he still remembered my name and would always say hi whenever I saw him in the hallways. He always tried to connect with his students and brighten up their days. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Coners subbed for me in numerous classes, but the first time was in my sophomore math class. My friend and I were watching the news on my phone, and when he came over to tell us to get going on the math, I told him the cathedral of Notre Dame was in flames. He pulled up a chair and started watching with us. He knew so much of the history of the cathedral, but he also wasn’t afraid of looking up what he didn’t, and I think that’s one of the most honorable traits a person can have.  He engaged us in discussion of what this event means in the context of the history of the cathedral and how this event will affect Paris. Every time seeing him after that, he would talk to me about current events and how it all could play out when it’s eventually in a history textbook. Coners got me excited to analyze history critically and apply that to modern event, and I can’t thank him enough for that. My deepest condolences go out to the Coners family, and I hope you all are doing well

John was a great guy.  Always there to help a friend. My son is Taylor Sherman and they got to know each other in college. I met him when my son was in the fraternity. He was a good man and a good friend. I last saw him when we helped my two kids move into their new apartment at the beginning of June. He will be missed. My condolences on the loss of your son.

I had Mr. Coners for a summer history class at Lockport, and on-and-off as a substitute teacher during my high school years. Even if he wasn’t a history teacher, he did a great job trying to explain the materials and always made everything fun. He always radiated positivity and went out of his way to say hello and check in on everyone. Heaven truly gained another angel. 

John was one of my absolute favorite people at Marist and in adult life, too. He was so loving, kind, caring, and everything anyone could have asked for in a friend. I recently lost my dad, and John was there for me through my dads health journey over the last year. I couldn’t be more blessed to have called him a friend. I’m truly heartbroken by the news of him passing. I’m praying for his family, friends, students, and anyone else impacted by his life. Heaven gained a special angel. 

Coach Coners always knew how to make someone smile, whether it be on the softball field or in the hallway at school, he always went out of his way to check in on us. I’ll miss all the laughs we had with him. He will be missed dearly, rest in peace Coners.

I had Mr. Coners for a history class over the summer as well as a fill in for a month of my horticulture class. The whole class (both classes actually) was able to get close to him and he was such a good teacher, I have never understood history more. Even if you didn't have him for a sub, his presence in the hallways was always good for a smile. He impacted me for the better and I miss him dearly.

I knew John from my time in Scouts, where he was always a kind and fun voice to any campout or event. We drifted apart after Scouts and briefly met again at college, but I knew he became an amazing teacher in equal measure to his amazing person.

When Mr. Coners walked into a classroom you knew the day was going to be great. His patience, kindness and laughter made the kids want to work hard just for him. He brought so many smiles to their faces. He made sure that each student felt valued and always made sure to watch for those that may have needed a little extra help. He will be so missed. John was one of the best people you could have ever met. Never heard him say a negative word about anyone. He radiated positivity every day that I knew him. The world is a little bit less brighter without him in it. Rest In Peace Brother.

I worked with John at LTHS.  He was a great sub and super with the students. We also worked  a lot of events together and he was always friendly with everyone and did a great job!! Walking into class and seeing Mr. Coners as your sub meant you were about to have a great day. I’ve never seen a teacher who was happy and excited to see students everyday, but that was him. You could say hi to him 30 times in one day Walking through the halls and each time it’d be like the first time he’d seen you in ages. He seemingly had real relationships with every student and no one ever had a bad thing to say about him. Personally, he encouraged me greatly with my decision to become a future educator in the same field of study as him. Rest In Peace Mr. Coners, you will be dearly missed.

i had mr. coners for summer school economics a few years ago, and he really made the class a lot of fun. he was genuinely so caring and kind to everyone in the class. i remember he would always put on undercover boss or shark tank on during class. after the summer ended, he continued to be super friendly to me and would always say hi to me whenever i passed him in the halls. my prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends. he will be truly missed ❤️

Mr. Coners was the first teacher to help me enjoy high-school. He was a substitute teacher for my World Studies class and made it the best class that year. He was the funniest and the kindest teacher. Throughout the years of seeing Mr. Coners in the hallway, he would always say hi and make a joke to me that would have me walking away laughing. In classes, he was no different. He would make jokes, walk around talking, and would ask everyone how they are doing. My favorite memory was when he once sat down next to me in class and started watching March Madness with me. He gave me so many more memories in high-school and I will be forever great to have known him. I’m going to miss Mr. Coners. May he Rest In Peace.

He was an amazing substitute ROTC teacher, gym coach, history teacher, and a good friend to everyone in his classes and always had a smile on his face saying good morning to everyone in the hallways. He was a great guy, my regards to the family.

Mr. Coners was the substitute for a teacher of mine that was on maternity leave, so I had him for most of the semester. It wasn’t a subject he was entirely comfortable in, but he showed up every day and did everything he could to help keep us on track. Although I don’t know him nearly as well as all of you, I feel like that was certainly a testament to his character. He showed up every day with a smile and joked his way through every presentation. I can only imagine what you are all going through right now. Heaven has gained another angel. My sincerest condolences.

I had the pleasure of being in Mr. Coners gym class at Lockport High  School and always enjoyed seeing him every single day. Everyday he had a smile on his face and everyone loved him for being who he was. He was my favorite person at Lockport and may he rest in peace.

He was a person that genuinely cared about the well being of everyone, and was always willing to help and make sure you were okay. Coach Coners was the best softball coach freshman year, he always brought laughs and positivity wherever he went. He would always have inside jokes with the whole team. Mr. Coners was one of the most dedicated teachers at Lockport, whether he had his own class or was being a substitute for someone else. Whenever I went to him for help with different sports photos for the yearbook, he was always ready to help without hesitation. He was someone with one of the biggest hearts and best personality. John was two years older than me at Marist and one of my peer-moderators for art class. John's memory always stuck with me due to his easy-going, relaxed demeanor. John talked to me, and my other classmates, not as someone two years younger, but as equals. He was always willing to help if we had questions. John was no Van Gogh but, hey, neither was I. It was his ability to access the student he was talking with, to bring the most out of them, that mattered. Despite John taking up but a sliver of my life, he made enough of an impression to be remembered, vividly, ten years later. The world needs more people like John. People who make lasting impressions with just the small amount of time they have. So it was with great sadness to learn of his early passing, yesterday. I hope this memory of mine can now become your memory, too. And I am sure it is one of hundreds just like it from others whom he had an impact on. May John rest in peace and his memories carry on. 

Mr. Coners was my freshman year softball coach and substitute for some of my classes the rest of high school. He was a person you’ll always remember. No matter where I saw him, there always seemed to be a smile on his face. He went out of his way to check up on his students or even just have a conversation with them because he genuinely cared. My condolences...I’m so sorry to hear about John. I worked with John at LTHS and the first day we met he Introduced himself and I replied “oh like the terminator” he laughed and said no with an “s”. 
 I went on to tell him that I have 3 relatives with the same name and red hair maybe we are related? We laughed and he said maybe?  He was the only person that I could say hello to in the hall 25 times and it was like the first time we said hello all day! The students loved him and the way he explained history was amazing! He will be greatly missed by all....the hallways will never be the same...

To John’s family,
Over the years, John and I would pass in the hall and laugh because we could never get each other’s name right.  Last year, he was across the hall with ROTC.  It was so nice to see him daily and know each other’s names.  He had a gentle spirit and was so happy to be doing what he was doing.  I had to discuss a couple of my students with him which resulted in my seeing the compassion he had for the students.  I wish we had had the time to talk more.

Mr. Coners did leave his mark as a teacher at Lockport Township High School. I can see that he enjoyed teaching and being around students. I was one of his students through my high school career. I first had Mr. Coners as a sub my sophomore year and after that school day I saw him at chipotle and we talked for a little bit Ever since then we’d always scream chipotle to each other in the hallways and he was always so sweet!! I graduated last year but he would always remember me and ask how I was even after 3 years!! He was definitely my fav teacher at lockport and I was so saddened to hear the news. Coach coners, was not only my coach for freshman year softball but he was my substitute teacher for history freshman year. I don’t know how to even word this....when he was my sub for horticulture at Lockport he opened  my eyes and made me want to actually try at highschool...seeing him in the halls he always had a smile always said hi to me always called my name out....he was one of the teachers that I was/will always remember.  He made school fun but yet taught us amazing...wish I could have thanked him one more time...

John was a wonderful friend at Marist and at ISU. He was always, and I mean always, the most optimistic person.  He was calm and understanding, and just someone you could enjoy being around in any context. It was ice to know he went on to work at a high school and had the chance share kind words and advice with the students.

John and I attended both Marist and Illinois State University. Although we were never too close in high school, he always made a point to go out of his way and say hello. This tradition was extended all four years of college, where he would make it a point to talk and engage with me even in passing on the quad. It was just the type of person he was; you truly don't meet many like that anymore, especially a young kid in high school and college. He had a way of seeking people out and making them feel special and important, and genuinely cared about their well-beings. I am forever grateful to say I knew John, and my heart breaks for his family and loved ones. You are close to my heart and in my thoughts during this horrible time.

Mr. Coners was my sub for Junior History. He was so kind and cared about all of us. He was always making our day brighter and trying to make us laugh, even if it was History class. Coach Coners' positive personality on the golf course was second to none. No matter how you were playing, he would always have your back. I do not think I've ever met a person with such a bubbly and infectious personality in my entire life. I only had Mr. Coners for half a semester my junior year, and as most substitute teachers do, I expected he would never remember me. However, Mr. Coners went out of his way each time he saw me to greet me, make sure I was well, and even used my name to make sure I KNEW he remembered who I was. For a student that often felt unnoticed, this meant a lot. I’ve heard this from all his prior students, that he always made a point to remember everyone and make us feel seen. In short, Mr. Coners was a wonderful man with a caring heart, and he will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Mr. Coners, you will be dearly missed. 

Mr. Coners was my sub freshman year and he alone made that year amazing. Even after Mr. Beach came back, Mr. Coners would still say hi to me in the hallway and ask me how my day was. I had Mr.Coners for a world studies class freshman year and i’m now a senior. He was always so fun to talk to and a great teacher who made the class fun to be in. I was Mr. Coner’s gym leader my senior year of high school. He was such a kind, caring, and sincere man. He would often ask me how baseball was going or where I planned on going to school to play baseball next year. He was always asking how others were doing. What was supposed to be a quiet study hall always turned into us conversing about sports, how my wrestling was going and how school was and just everyday life. He was always checking up on me and even looking back on my junior year this past year, there wasn’t a day where i’d see him and he wouldn’t make my day better with a smile and by greeting me. Gone too soon and he’ll be missed by many. Rest in peace Mr. Coners. Thanks for making all the down days better.

John was one of those special people.  I enjoyed working with him at LTHS.  When he came into my room I knew the students were in good hands, my plans would be followed, and most of all the kids were happy.   They loved John.  He was always smiling and kind.  He will be missed.  
Thoughts and prayers are with his family.  May your memories of him comfort you during this difficult time.  

So heartbroken with the news of Mr. Coners passing. He had a pure soul and a kind heart. Mr. Coners was one of the best substitute teachers Lockport High School had, as well as my favorite study hall teacher. My condolences to the girls softball team, all of his colleagues and most of all his loved ones. You will truly be missed Mr. C! Rest in Paradise 🖤

John and we’re friends at Marist and at ISU. He was such an awesome guy and always knew how to make you laugh, regardless of the situation. One of the best memories I’ll have is The ski trip we went on to Park City, Utah in 2012. So hard to believe that was 8 years ago already, feels like it was just this past winter. John’s an amazing person and he will be very much missed. 

My deepest condolences to the Coners family and all those who were close to him.  Working with John at Lockport for the past 4+ years, he was always a friendly face in the halls.  He will be greatly missed.

Even though Coach Coners was not my official coach, he always did what he could do to make others succeed and make them happy. He was a great man who loved making people smile. He would always brighten up my days in the hallways by saying something funny to me. Love you Coach, you will be missed. 

Mr. Coners was my summer school economics teacher after sophomore year. My friend was also in his class and we’d always sit and work together (which, I have to add, he was tolerant enough to allow). He would always make the time during class to talk to us personally and ask us how we were doing, which he did for all of his students. This past school year he did the same whenever he saw me in the hallway and, if my friend wasn’t with me, he would ask on her behalf anyway. These otherwise small gestures of kindness always made my day :) I’ll never forget that.

Although coach coners was never able to be my coach nor my teacher just seeing me around the softball fields at Lockport made him go out of his way whenever he saw me to say hi  and it truly brought joy to me. Rest easy coach. 

I had the honor of working with John at LTHS, he started with task force the same summer that I started full-time in Technology.  Always kind, always polite, he was such a pleasure to work with.  His students always spoke well of him, as did staff.  Please accept my condolences, I will miss his smile in our hallways.

My deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Coners. I am sad to see a wonderful, bright face leave us, and I know he’s in a better place now and forever. Thoughts and prayers <3

John was an incredible friend. He had such a bright future and spoke so much about how he loved teaching his students. I am absolutely heartbroken to know that his life has been cut short. John will truly be missed by many. An amazing leader and someone that would always motivate other to do what was right, the world will not be the same without John Coners. Rest in Peace, Delta Chi Brother.

Mr. Coners was the best Summer School Econ teacher. He taught me so much and let us do a lot. He is going to be missed.

coach coners brightened every room he walked into at lockport. he was by far one of the nicest and most funny teachers i’ve ever met and i’m honored to have met him. rest easy <3

Mr. Coners was one of the most genuine individuals at Lockport Township Highschool. None of the teachers, none of the students, and no one else compared to him. Whether it was a world studies class, a sports event, or a gym class, he gave his students all he had to offer. It was an honor to be in his last fifth period team sports class. I missed a lot of school, and I had an abundance of makeups to do. I will forever cherish our last phonecall in which he allowed me to have a different assignment. I lost 60 pounds in the last year, and without all the makeups and all his positive words of encouragement I don’t think I’d be where I am today. John Coners is really John Legend Coners. All my family’s thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones; he will truly be missed by all. 

It’s rare to have a teacher who actually understands their students.  Rare to have a class that’s just as fun as it is informational.  Especially rare to have learning ancient history be the highlight of my day, and yet Mr. Coners’ World Studies Class was all that and more.  When I moved to East Campus, so did he, providing a friendly face in the intimidating labyrinth.  Lockport just won’t be the same without seeing him every morning in the J Hallway, welcoming us back.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

I had Mr. Coners for a summer school class a few years ago and, to say the least, he was an amazing man who genuinely cared about his job and his students. He always remembered my name when I’d say hi to him in the hall. The world needs more teachers like him. My condolences to his family and friends. 

Coach Coners is by far one of my favorite coaches I have ever had. Wherever he went, there was always a ray of light around him. Whether it be a dad joke or a silly dance move, Coners always found a way to make you smile 💛 

Coach Coners was one of my favorite teachers even though I never had him for a class. He would always go out of his way to say hi to me every morning my sophomore year when he knew I was going through a hard time. He always knew how to make me laugh. Talking to him was always one of the best parts of my day. Rest in peace Coach. I will always remember you and your kindness. Sending all my love and prayers to his family <3

John was a great guy - a real gentleman. 
We had a few classes together at Marist. I remember John’s energy & personality, it definitely lit up the classroom. He was very kind and funny. He will be deeply missed by all. My prayers go out to his family.
