Janet (nee Doyen) Coon, 72, of Orland Park, Illinois passed away at home from pancreatic cancer on December 9, 2020; Daughter of William (d.1991) and Florence (d.1992); Loving wife to John; Devoted mother to Carol (d.1969), Carol (Jim) Mandernach, Patricia Stoudt (Scott Hyman), and Tari (Bill) McGrane; Warm and affectionate Nana to Zachary and Madelyn Mandernach, Kaeley, Cassidy, Mackenzie, Tierney, Brigid and Liam McGrane. Cherished sister of Marilyn (Joe) Zadlo, Shirley (Ron) Abram, Charlene (Fred) Fromm, Darlene (d.1989), and Diane (Dan) Ciarlette; Close friend and neighbor to Janet Parent (d. 2018); Endeared aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Janet was born in Chicago and attended the Ryerson school until age 12. Her family then moved to Justice, Illinois. There she attended Argo High School where she sang in the A Capella Choir and performed in the production of Oklahoma. She met her lifelong love John while working together at a Pick ‘N Save and married him on August 3, 1968. They have lived in Orland Park ever since. John and Janet are long time parishioners of St. Michael's Parish, where Janet briefly sang in the choir. She was a devoted Catholic and showed her love of Jesus in caring for everyone she knew.
Janet worked for some years at Mr. Ed’s grocery store and then spent the rest of her career working for Dominicks until her retirement in 2009. In retirement, Janet loved to quilt, work in her garden, and spend time with her grandchildren, children and sisters as much as possible. She was a competitive game player and loved winning but amused us all with her funny faces and comments in defeat. She loved to cook for her family and later to eat out and just share laughs over food.
A funeral mass will take place in her honor at St. Michael Catholic Church in Orland Park on Monday January 4, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Justice, Illinois. Current Covid-19 protocols will be in place. Those planning to attend the Mass should send an email with name, email address and phone number (at least one per household) to tari.mcgrane@gmail.com as soon as possible. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, www.pancan.org.
