Judith Ann Johnson, 80, of Orange Park, FL, passed away quietly in her sleep on April 26, 2023, following an extended illness. “Miss Judy,” as she was known, was born on April 27, 1942, in Christchurch, New Zealand.
In 1960 a young U.S. Navy sailor seeking a pen pal, carved a message on a piece of wood and tossed it over the side of his ship, the USS Glacier. It washed ashore in Christchurch and found its way to Judy. Her first letter was returned multiple times, eventually reaching James in port at Rio de Janeiro. This exchange led to a three-year courtship, culminating in marriage and a move to the United States at the age of 21.
For over 30 years Judy operated an at-home daycare in Pensacola and then Orange Park, impacting the lives of many children and their families. In retirement Judy and James enjoyed traveling the country, pampering their many Maltese dogs, and sharing meals with good friends.
Judy is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, James A. Johnson, Jr., her son, Duane Johnson (Clare), and grandchildren Bradley Johnson and Savannah Johnson.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Ronald Dyhrberg and Thelma Baggott.
Judy will forever be remembered as a beloved wife, devoted mother, and faithful friend.
