The daughter of Manuel C. Silvia and Sarah (Serina) Cabral Silvia, sister of the late George Silvia and his wife Clementina (Tina) Silvia, and sister of the late Arthur Silvia. Sarah was born in Fall River, MA, and had resided in Orange City, FL since 1988.
Sarah was happily married to the late John R. West, a fellow avid traveler, for 47 years. Together, they traveled extensively and had many adventures, with Sarah using her gift of gab to charm the locals and make life-long friends at every stop. Sarah also shared her wanderlust and especially her love of dancing with her devoted husband Mel, a retired aircraft maintenance supervisor for Pan America World Airways, with whom she continued to travel widely. Some of Sarah’s fondest travels were to Blue Sky Montana, Charleston, with her favorite being the cruises she took with Mel to Alaska.
Sarah is survived by nieces Karen Sousa, Cheryl Jackimocz, Jennifer Fernandes and Tara Silvia; her niece and best friend Betsy Romano Beauregard and her sons Rick Beauregard and Jeff Beauregard; numerous great- and great-great nieces and nephews; and myriad friends from across the globe.
Stylish, bright, and vivacious, Sarah is described by many as “the kindest person” they ever met. Because of her role as a second mother to “her girls”, she was known as “Madrinha” to all of her Silvia family nieces, despite being godmother to only Karen. Sarah’s open heart also led to her adoption as an honorary aunt to many of her young friends, who embraced Sarah, shared many holidays with her, and included her in their world. Always thoughtful and organized, Sarah never failed to send a card or make a call for her loved one’s important life events. Sarah lived the tenets of her Catholic faith, embodying warmth, acceptance, and generosity.
A gifted student and strategist, Sarah studied at B.M.C. Durfee High School, Thibodeau’s Business College, and Bryant University before working her way up from secretary to a Senior Buyer and Sales Coordinator. Sarah began her career in the 1950’s, which included St. Regis Paper Company, Sheldahl, Inc., Gloucester Engineering Co., and Battenfeld of America before concluding at Brunswick Corporation in Deland, FL. Sarah pioneered the use of modern technologies, including the IBM System 34 Computer, Telex, and copy machines and excelled at implementing cost-saving and efficiency plans. These skills were also evident in Sarah’s superhuman ability to purchase designer clothes at shocking discounts and her tech-savvy embrace of social media.
Funny and fun, sharp as tack, lovely and kind. Sarah will be sorely missed and has left a mark on all who knew her. Godspeed to our dearest one.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in DeBary, FL on Tuesday, January 16th, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
Sarah supported too many charities to list, however donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association @ alz.org or to Northern Plains Reservation Aid @ nativepartnerships.org .
