Howard was born on September 9, 1934, in Sioux City, IA to Harry and Alice (nee Paulson) Hammerstrom. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Howard graduated from Central High School in 1952. He attended Augustana College majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He was inducted into the United States Army in December 1956 and was given an honorable discharge after reserve service in 1963. After his discharge, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Augustana.
Howard met Beverly Fredrickson while working at Montgomery Elevator in Moline, IL. They were married on June 1, 1957, at Salem Lutheran Church in Moline and just celebrated their 65th anniversary. Howard worked with Montgomery/Kone until he retired in 2003.
He was instrumental in increasing elevator safety standards and designing elevators around the world. As just one example. Howard helped design the elevators in the St. Louis Arch.
Howard and Beverly raised their children, Connie and Kent in Moline, IL. Howard was a pilot, fulfilling his lifelong dream of flying, by earning his pilot’s license in 1977. He served the Lord and his community by volunteering as a Treasurer for his church and other community organizations. Howard loved woodworking and he and Beverly were avid Hummel collectors.
He is survived by his wife Beverly, his daughter Connie Jo Keeling (John )and his son Kent Hammerstrom (Cindy). Howard is also survived by his grandchildren Shannon, Jennifer-Jo, Anders, Aaron and William Howard.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 -12:30 pm on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Deltona Memorial Funeral Home, 1295 Saxon Blvd, Orange City, Florida 32763. The celebration of life service will begin at 12:30 pm at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will take place at 2:30 at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, Florida.
