George Virgil Rogers, Sr. peacefully entered into eternal rest on January 16, 2021, at the adult home care facility, Caring Hands, Deltona, Florida. He was born February 11, 1936, in Lake Helen, Florida to the late George Rogers and Julia Ann Lockwood. George was predeceased by his loving wife Dorothy Sims Rogers.
George was a member of Mt. Olive AME Church in Lake Helen, Florida and recently rededicated his life to Christ in November 2020 in the witness of his son and daughter-in law.
In 1954, George graduated from Euclid High School of DeLand, Florida. Upon entering the US Army in 1956, he proudly served his country in active military duty overseas during the Korean War until being honorably discharged in 1958. Embarking on his professional career, George provided food service as a Master Chef for over 30 years at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital, Marlboro Township, New Jersey. During that time, he also took an exceptional interest in supporting his community by serving as a police officer reservist for the Neptune Township P.B.A. Local #74, in Monmouth County, New Jersey. In addition, George took pride in his lifelong dedication and legendary brotherhood with the members of the local Masonic Lodge # 32 Mount Pisgah, Mahja Temple No. 47 of Asbury Park, New Jersey. After moving back to Florida, George continued with his love of cooking and went on to work well into his retirement years for the famous King’s Taste Barbecue in Eustis, Florida. It was there that he enjoyed preparing traditional southern cuisine loved by many.
George leaves to cherish his memory his only sister, Kate Glenn, Neptune, NJ, two sisters-in-law; Julia Rogers (Deltona, Fl.), and Sylvia Rogers (Turbeville, SC) and children from his first union with Murvelle Landrum; George V. Rogers, III, (Theresa) Inman, SC; Kevin W. Rogers (Antoinette) Ocean, NJ; Edwin G. Rogers, Sr. (Valerie) Stafford, VA; Dwight F. Rogers (Karen) Boiling Springs, SC; Felicia Rogers Lattimore, Spartanburg, SC; John Rogers (Rachel) Forest City, NC. He also leaves to cherish his memory nine grandsons, seven granddaughters, seven great-grandsons, and six great-granddaughters and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He leaves to cherish his beloved cousins Loretta Dukes, Curtis, Alvin and Ralph Williams who he also grew up with as sister and brothers.
George was predeceased by his two brothers, Carrol Rogers, and Andrew Rogers.
