Fay was born in Emma, Illinois to the late George and Anna Hurst on November 19, 1934. She attended Carmi Township High School and upon her graduation in 1953 worked for General Telephone Company of Illinois for 3 years before meeting and marrying Joe Nichols who was currently serving in the United States Air Force.
After traveling around the world, Joe retired from the Air Force in 1971 and they made their home in Indianapolis for 23 years where Fay worked for and retired from JC Penney in 1994. Upon retirement Joe and Fay moved to DeBary, FL to a retirement community where Fay was active and served on the Home Owners Association as a Director for 3 years, was Activity Director for 2 years, and wrote a news column for the community's Kings Lake website.
Fay was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her parents, sisters Mildred Whitley, Earlene Youngman, and an infant brother, and infant grandson. To continue her legacy are her sons Gary of Lake Mary, FL, Greg of Port St Lucie, and granddaughters, Stephanie (Nichols) and her husband Brett Smith, Christina (Nichols) and her husband Cruise Hall, Chelsea Ball, and great grandchildren; Wyatt, Charlotte and Alden.
