Mary Ellen Hess, born on November 3, 1935, in Erie, Pennsylvania to Hilary A. and Rose M. Sanner, left this world on December 27, 2023, surrounded by the love of her family. She was the beloved wife of Richard “Dick” Hess, with whom she shared a lifetime of joy, laughter, and unwavering commitment.
Mary Ellen leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Cynthia Tessin, Julie Chevraux (Matt), and son Joseph Hess (Isabel). Her grandchildren Thomas Tessin, John Tessin, Garrett Hess (Jazmin), Sarah Chevraux, Ryan Chevraux, and Alyssa Chevraux, were her pride and joy.
While living in Erie, Pennsylvania, Mary Ellen earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Villa Maria College. After college she relocated to California and taught junior high school in Riverside.
Mary Ellen and Dick's love story began when they were both actively involved in the Catholic Alumni Club where she served as Secretary when Dick was President. On Valentines Day 1963, Dick proposed to Mary Ellen and they were married in July. After the birth of their first child, they moved into a home in Ontario, California where they lived for over 55 years. Together, they navigated the highs and lows of life, creating a home filled with warmth and love.
Mary Ellen's spiritual journey was marked by her dedication to the Catholic Church. She lent her voice to the choir at St. George’s in Ontario, California, and later found solace and community at St. Anthony’s in Upland, California. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life and her involvement in the church reflected her deep sense of community and service.
A devoted wife and mother, Mary Ellen's home was a haven for family and friends. She made every meal a special occasion and the aroma of freshly baked cookies often welcomed visitors. Her nurturing spirit and generous heart touched everyone fortunate enough to be a part of her life. After raising her family, she often enjoyed morning walks with friends to Mass and breakfast.
Mary Ellen's life was shaped by the bonds of family and the enduring love she shared with her husband, Dick. She joins him in eternity, as well as her sisters Grace Rood, Kathleen Loftus, and brother Richard Sanner, who preceded her in death. Mary Ellen is survived by her sister Doris Griffith.
As we bid farewell to Mary Ellen, we remember a woman whose kindness, warmth, and unwavering love created a legacy that will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her loved ones in the embrace of God's love.
