Mary Evelyn Sadler De Young (1933-2022) Daughter of Evelyn Mathews and James Y. Sadler. Mary was born in the small town of Las Vegas, Nevada. She was outgoing and decided to attend college which was a big challenge for a female in those days. She graduated from Whittier College with degrees in music and education to begin her career in teaching. Midway through her career, she completed her Masters Degree in Education Administration from the University of La Verne. Teaching was Mary’s passion. She touched and influenced many students during her 40 year career in the Upland Unified School District. During this time, she taught both elementary and junior high students. She began her teaching career at Upland Elementary, teaching 5th grade. Later Mary transferred to Pioneer Jr. High School where she was choir director for many years. She also taught history, leadership, and eventually art. Mary was well respected by her peers and district staff and was the President of the Upland Unified School District Teachers Union for many years. Mary married William Eelco DeYoung in 1957 and began a family before starting her teaching career. They had 3 children, Doug, Diane and Dan and made their home in the San Antonio Heights. Mary is survived by her children, her sister Sandra Sadler, 4 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
