Our Mother was born in Coleman Texas, and she was the youngest daughter of Henrietta and Juan Cardenas in 1925.
Her parents were both from Mexico, and met in The United States and Married and started a family in Coleman Texas with, Pedro, Juan, Estifana, Maria, Kile, Jerry, Val, and the youngest Jesse. In those days as with most families, the whole family went to work. As my Uncle Jess said "if you didn't work you didn't have groceries on the table" and The Cardenas Family were no exception. One story my Mother told us was when she turned 5 years old, my Grandmother told her it was time for her to help out at the next cotton season. Our Grandmother made a "cotton sack" just for her and that was a happy day for her! She said she could still remember how proud she was that she could go to work with all her older brothers and sisters. This was also were she learned to love "coffee" Our mother told us that each work morning everyone had a cup of coffee and she wanted a cup too! Being too young, our Grandmother wouldn't let her have a cup, but our Grandfather Juan would let her sip from his cup! She loved a good cup of black coffee ever since and anybody coming to her home always had a hot cup of coffee from her kitchen! My Uncle Jesse also told us she had another job, taking care of him! So in between working she often stayed behind to watch over her little brother who she loved very much and regaled us with many amusing stories about her little brother! The Cardenas Family worked by the seasons and that meant traveling from Texas, to Nebraska, Wyoming, to name a few and traveled back around home again to Texas. They also went to school in between seasons and our Mother use to say that "Life was her school"
My Uncles were all in the United States Army and served in WW2 and returned back to Texas. My Uncle Jesse told us that our Uncle John went to California first and saw many opportunities there and wrote to the family to come out. My Uncles Jerry and Val and our Mother came out first and my Grandparents, and my Uncle Jesse and cousin Lupe came next, with most of the family following. They settled in Ontario, California and despite that she ended up living in California for well over 60 years, Margaret always said she was a "Texas Gal" and she never forgot her love for her Westerns and the Pecan Trees and that she was from a little town called "Coleman"
Our Mother met "Alfred Vindiola" who also came back from serving in WW2 in the Armed Forces. The story our Mother tells is that herself and her brother Jerry were on their way to work when their car had a flat tire and had to park by the side of road. A friend of Uncle Jerry happen to drive by and it was a young man whose name was Alfred but they called him "Tan", he offered to help and this is how our parents met! Alfred Vindiola and Margaret Cardenas fell in love and married in 1948. They soon had a family with Henry, Rudy, Ruby, Pearl, Maria and Joseph. With the opportunities that opened up after the War, our Dad was able to buy home in Ontario for his family and both of our parents worked hard( Dad working in L.A and Mom raising us at home) to give their children what they didn't have. Our Mother cooked awesome food and she made fresh hot flour tortillas everyday. Neighbors could smell the fresh hot aroma of them cooking and if they knocked on the door she would call you in and let you have one and there always seemed to be some butter on the table if you wanted some on your tortilla! Her Tamales were loved by all and she always said the main ingredient was "LOVE" In this home we learned a lot about our family history on both sides and we enjoyed a good life with our Parents who did their best and taught us the value of hard work and to Love one another and to Honor God and Love our Country.
We were all Blessed to have our beloved Mother Margaret, Mother-In-Law, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and Sister for 87 years and still it wasn't long enough. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten! We all carry our own beautiful memories to keep us all smiling and to comfort us when we miss her. Her children were her Life and her grandchildren her Joy.
Thank You Lord for giving us Margaret Cardenas Vindiola as long as you did. Rest in Peace Mom, we will all meet again ~ Lovingly, Always, Your Children, Henry, Rudy, Ruby, Pearl, Maria and Joey ~
