Laura was born on May 31, 1963, in Upland, California, to Robert and Florance Triner. Together with her younger sister Debbie, she grew up in Rancho Cucamonga within walking distance of an uncle, an aunt, and cousins who provided support and many hours of family playtime. It was a good neighborhood to grow up in.
Junior high and high school were filled with trips to the beach with her sister and other friends, and practicing and playing the flute for the concert and marching bands. She was also a gymnast at Alta Loma High School and with the local gymnastics club. She enjoyed doing macramé projects and spending quiet time reading.
Laura was a highly motivated student, earning a Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science from Cal Poly Pomona in 1988, and a Master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Long Beach State in 1992. During her years at Cal Poly she was very active in the Concert Band and Marching Bands, as well as the Rose Float Club and Committee. It was at Cal Poly where she met the love of her life, Doug. They later married in 1990.
She started work with the City of Los Angeles Personnel Department in research, and loved it. She continued to gain other skills as she grew in her career, culminating in management of a team for the Los Angeles Fire Department Personnel Services Section. Her friends and coworkers describe Laura as a calm, kind, down-to-earth, genuine person who was easy to get along with and work with. She was an extremely capable and knowledgeable employee and manager.
Throughout her life, Laura was blessed with a very close relationship with her parents. As adults, Laura and her mother, Mary Florance “Flo” Triner, enjoyed going to tea together, going on “haircut” dates, and talking about gardening and travel. Her father remembers her as a kind, gentle, loving, thoughtful, and responsible daughter. She also enjoyed time with Doug’s parents, Donald and Janet Shultz, talking about dogs and past and future camping and travel adventures.
Laura loved to travel with Doug, family, and friends. Her travels with Doug took them to many ski areas across North America. She also traveled to Europe, Australia, Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, and visited relatives in the Chicago area and elsewhere across the United States.
Things that brought joy to her life included going to Disneyland, raising Golden Retrievers, camping “van trips”, skiing, ice skating, and birding and backpacking with her sister and brother-in-law. Laura and Doug’s honeymoon was at Disney World and they had been multiple times since, for anniversaries and just for fun. Just this last November, they enjoyed time there with her cousin’s family.
Laura Lynn Triner is survived by her husband of 33 years, Doug Shultz, her father Robert Triner, and her sister Debbie House. She will remain in our hearts forever.
A funeral service for Laura will be held Saturday, January 21, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 920 W. 6th Street, Ontario, CA 91762.
