Whether it was being spoiled by her Nenita, lassoing an avocado torta from her neighbor’s hands, jumping off the roof of the house in her PF flyers or volunteering to be lit on fire by her big brother Fer while playing “Cowboys and Indians”, she enjoyed a blissful childhood.
She came to the United States in 1954 with her family where they moved to Los Angeles, CA. She made priceless friendships and memories in her neighborhood.
Hedy attended Saint Vincent’s Elementary School in Los Angeles where her love for God and dedication grew. She was in awe of the Church and always shared how she admired the nuns and their graceful devotion. She even contemplated becoming a nun herself someday!
She then attended Our Lady of Loretto Highschool, an all girl’s school in Los Angeles. She was very friendly and established a lot of friendships. There she met her best friend, Enid, where their daily laughter and shenanigans made high school an enjoyable highlight of her life.
She went on to study cosmetology at Los Angeles Trade Technical school where she then landed a job at the Music Center in Los Angeles. After a few years she decided the industry was not for her and took a job at Security Bank.
Hedy met her lifelong love, Christopher Hernandez, at work one day. It was love at first sight and they were inseparable from that day forward. Married for 32 years, they shared a beautiful life together with their children.
She was a fashionista, a makeup artist, interior designer. She could make anything look good with her creative eye and flair. Hedy was known for searching far and wide to find the perfect shade of red lipstick to match her red shoes. She was always dressed beautifully, kept a beautiful home and had her kids dressed like baby movie stars. She was amazing.
Hedy was beautiful, kind, selfless; she loved with her whole heart and soul. She gave all she had to all she loved. She was an amazing cook and always fed everyone any way possible. She made an excellent Thanksgiving turkey dinner with delicious gravy everyone craved all year. She made a killer potato salad, pasta salad and nopales salad. She even made star and seashell soup so delicious, picky toddlers would eat it up without hesitation.
Her warm personality, kind ways and acceptance of all is what made Hedy such a special person. All who met her loved her. From her early years at St. Vincent’s, to high school, to being room mother for her children’s class, to her assisted living facility. She was very popular with the gentlemen and friends with all of the ladies.
She loved her family with all of her being, taking care of everyone around her. She took care of her mother, her nieces and nephews and even their children. She was loved by all and left them with beautiful memories.
Despite numerous health ailments she kept a positive attitude. She was very strong and resilient despite all of her hardships. Her happiness was being around family and most of all, with her grandchildren Isabella, Darla, Scarlett, Christopher and Ruby. They loved her laugh and goofy ways. She was lovingly named “Grandma Hoo-hoo” because she always said “Hello! Yoo hoo! To the kids. They already miss her dearly.
