Though we are saddened by the passing of our mother, Elsie Mae Hiner Remke on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Carmel Village in Fresno California, we rejoice in the blessing of having her on earth with us for 94 1/2 years.
Elsie was born in Slapout, Oklahoma on October 9,1929. Her family migrated to Ontario, California in 1935.She was introduced to her Savior as a young child when she attended the Ontario Foursquare Church. It was there that she met some of her closest life long friends. As a teen she was a member of the marching band at Chaffey High School. In her twenties, she had a daughter and two sons with her first husband, Cecil Garrison. In her thirties, she had a son and a daughter with her second husband, Dean Remke.
In 1973, Elsie moved to Fresno to be near her best friend, Emma.
Elsie worked as a waitress for most of her career and is remembered for her many years at The Cactus Patch in Ontario and BJ’s Kitchen in Fresno. Elsie was a talented dancer and could dance a mean jitterbug. She could even dance on skates. She was a member of various bowling leagues. Her favorite pastimes were playing Bingo, cards, slot machines, and watching baseball, and golf.
Elsie was fun and loving, and sometimes stern and sassy, but she had the ability to make others feel seen and important. She was a great listener and always had a word of wisdom to offer. She had the unique ability to love the downtrodden without judging. Although Elsie will truly be missed, it was her desire for others to be comforted by knowing that she is now in Heaven with Jesus.
Elsie is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Alice Hiner, and siblings, Louise Hiner, Charles Hiner, Nellie Tucker, Gerald Hiner, Glenn Hiner, and Leroy Hiner, and granddaughter Cristina Long, and great grandchild, Mystery Giles.
Elsie is survived by her five children, Cindy (Gary Hubartt) Garrison, Estal “Bud” (Antoinette) Garrison, Lonnie “Duke” Garrison, Kenny Remke, and Roxe Anne (Wayne) Long, and grandchildren, Joshua Giles, Shiloh Giles, Jericho (Harris) Kinyanjui, Noah (Tina) Giles, Seth (Vicky) Garrison, Joyce Long, Haley (Cody) Stauffer, and great grandchildren, Dakota Giles, Cayden Giles, Wyatt Giles, Everett Giles, Arkyn Giles, Charlotte Norris, and Daphne Norris, and sister, Pauline Righetti.
