

Elizabeth Gutierrez passed away quietly at home on February 7, 2021 after a lingering pulmonary illness. She was just 3 months shy of her 100th birthday. Her daughters, Maria Gutierrez and Iris Lucero, were by her side. They had attended lovingly for their mother during the long 15 months of her hospice care. Elizabeth Cartagena was born and raised in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. The oldest of 6 siblings, she moved to New York City as a young woman where she met her future husband, Gabriel Gutierrez, who had immigrated from his native Mexico. They settled in an apartment in the Greenwich Village neighbor-hood where they raised their two young daughters. When the girls were teenagers, the family moved to Los Angeles, where Gabriel worked for Kaiser Aluminum. Elizabeth worked as a seamstress in the women’s sportswear industry for over 40 years. Her husband passed away in March 2000 after a long ill-ness. She lovingly cared for him during that period of over 18 years.
Elizabeth was a woman of deep faith, full of life and generosity of spirit. She particularly en-joyed celebrating holidays with her family and friends. Elizabeth was a loving and much loved matriarch and is survived by her 2 daughters (Iris and Maria), 2 grandchildren (Diana and Steven), 4 great-grand-children (Breanna, Jordan, Nicolas and Anthony), and 3 great-great grandchildren (Dean, Miles and Bon-nie).
Elizabeth will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband at a closed graveside service at Bellevue Memorial Park cemetery in Ontario on Friday, March 26, 2021.
