Elaine Marie Grant, daughter of Eugene Joseph and Sarah Grant passed away March 12, 2016 in Claremont, California at age 91. Elaine was born on November 20, 1924 in Saskatchewan, Canada to two Irish immigrants. She moved to the United States and became a naturalized citizen on January 13, 1933. Elaine grew up in Santa Monica, California and was a devout member of the Catholic Church.
In 1945 she married Hiram “Marty” Martin and their marriage spanned over six decades until Marty’s death in November 2014. Elaine often said being married to a member of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s department was a challenge due to the dangerous working conditions and difficult hours. She was proud that she raised three children that all attended college and achieved advanced degrees.
Family was her primary focus and Elaine supported Marty in all his endeavors, including starting a band at Leisure Village when they retired. While Marty would organize the band members, Elaine would arrange room reservations, ticket sales and table decorations. She was an active participant in the sewing club, and many family members benefited from her custom creations. Elaine and Marty always functioned as a team, and when Elaine developed Alzheimer’s, the Martin’s moved from Oceanside to Claremont to be near family and resided together in assisted living. ]
Elaine is survived by her sons, Brian Martin and his wife Virginia, Keith Martin and his wife Beth, and her daughter, Briana Lane and her husband Richard. She has been blessed with seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Draper Mortuary, 811 N. Mountain Avenue, Ontario, California 91762 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Alzheimer’s Association.
