He passed away at City of Hope in Duarte, California on August 1, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bella (Jose) Doughty, daughter Michelle (Thomas) Mathew and son Gregory (Kim) Doughty; and grandchildren Josiah Mathew, Jonathan (Carissa) Mathew, Jordan Mathew and Alannah Doughty.
David grew up on the family farm in Petersburg, Michigan and joined the Navy to flee the harsh winters and finally see the world. He met and married his beloved “Bell" while stationed at Sangley Point in Cavite City, Philippines. After the service he returned to Michigan to work on the assembly line lifting bumpers at Ford Motor Company. He applied to the Department of Defense to once again flee the harsh winters of Michigan, and relocated his young family to Makakilo, Hawaii. He went on to earn his BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Hawaii, and later, his MS in Systems Management from University of Southern California (Subic Bay Satellite).
David’s career with the US Government would move him and the family to Subic Bay Naval Base in Olongapo City, Philippines; Fleet Analysis Center Naval Weapons Station in Corona, California; and Camp John Hay Air Station in Baguio City, Philippines. He retired from public service after 35 years then went on to work with a defense contractor in Las Vegas, Nevada before finally retiring for good in 2005.
Throughout all his moves around the world, David left a piece of his construction magic on every place the family lived. His retirement years were spent working full-time on the family home in Alta Loma, California where he could often be found either under the floorboards or up on the roof, even after 2 hip replacements, a back surgery and years of nerve pain from shingles. Despite all his physical setbacks, he never complained - except about the fact that he couldn't get back to work.
Although a man of few words, among his greatest joys were watching his children and grandchildren grow. He was Dad, Grandpa, Kuya, Ninong, Uncle and just Dave to many. He will be immeasurably missed by us all.
