Wayne David Vaughn, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at home in the early evening hours of October 04, 2022, comforted by his wife and daughters. The beloved husband and father of eight was 83 years old. Born January 14, 1939, in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was the oldest of Treber and Darlene Vaughn’s six children.
After high school, Dave moved to California and enticed his siblings to follow him to the Golden State. He settled into Retail Management and, over the years, managed at Gemco Department Stores, Two Guys Department Stores, and Builders Emporium Hardware Store. While managing the Builders Emporium in Upland, CA, he met the love of his life, Diane. They were married on October 19, 1979, at the First Presbyterian Church of Orange, and they would have been married for 43 years on October 19, 2022. She was his rock, as he was hers, for the rest of his life. They were members of Northkirk Presbyterian Church for 41 years.
Dave moved into Sales and Marketing and worked for Intercraft Frames, Dynasty, and City Art. In retirement, he loved working for the RC Quakes minor league baseball team, making friends with fans, players and reporters. Dave also worked as a Marshal at Upland Hills Golf Course in exchange for golf with his golfing buddies. Even working for the Quakes and the golf course, he still had time to help coach the varsity Softball teams at United Christian Academy and Los Osos High Schools. No one enjoyed retirement more than Dave. He was busy every day.
Dave had many passions in life – boxing, baseball, softball, coaching, golfing, fishing, camping, photography, Ohio State Football, Quakes Baseball, California Angels, and all things Elvis. Active until the last couple of years, he could be found on the golf course, a softball field, his garage, or out to breakfast with his sister. He enjoyed his walks around the neighborhood with his Bassett Hound Tootsie and, more recently, his Chiweenie Penny. But his greatest passion was for his family, always making time for the kids, grandkids, or a great-grandchild’s baseball game.
Dave is survived by his loving wife Diane and his children Guy, Keith, Cheryll, Kathy, Dana, Kristy, Traci, and Janelle. Dave is also survived by his two sisters Sharon Rose and Sandra Kay. He loved his sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, 22 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. His youngest grandchild, Lola Adele, was born three months ago and quickly became the apple of his eye.
Although his final round has been fought and he finished his last round of golf, Dave lived a full and inspiring life. He was an incredible patriarch to our extended family, a loyal friend to many, a coach and mentor to even more, and will never be forgotten by any.
A celebration of his life will be held at Draper Mortuary in Ontario, CA. In lieu of flowers, please donate to goodsports.org to help provide sports equipment to underserved youth or take a friend to lunch or dinner. While those who loved him will grieve his death, we celebrate his life and continue to hold fast to God’s loving, comforting and peaceful embrace.
