Stanley Kafchinski, 86, of Oneonta passed away Monday, April 1, 2013 at the A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta. A longtime resident of Oneonta, he was born on November 17, 1926 in Scranton, PA. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was the son of the late Joseph Kafchinski and Rose Duda Kafchinski.
He attended Springfield HS in Springfield, PA and joined the US Army and served proudly during WWII until October 1946.For most of his working career he was self-employed. In 1952 he moved to Oneonta to distribute eggs for David White before owning and operating his own egg business, Riverside Farms. For a brief time he was a Nationwide Insurance agent. In the mid 60's he owned and operated a service station on Chestnut Street. In the early 70's he worked for Nik-0-Lok and Standard Change, which led to his forming his own distributorship BESSCO. He also owned his own Laundromat during this time.
Early in his career he was a member of Kiwanis, Elks Club, Jaycees and VFW. While he was a workaholic, he took great pleasure in flying. He owned his own Navion and Cessna airplanes. He loved tinkering with cars, mainly rebuilding engines. A favorite pastime would find him driving through country roads in upstate New York. As a good neighbor, he plowed many driveways and mowed many lawns for several decades.
On July 18, 1945 he was united in marriage to the former Jean Elizabeth Smith in Lymanville, PA. His loving family includes his wife of 67 years; two sons, Ronald and his wife, Linda of Sykesville, MD and Rodney of Unadilla, NY; one daughter, Regina Baker and her husband, Cecil of Oneonta and one former daughter-in-law, Patricia Green Kafchinski. He had 6 grandsons and 2 granddaughters, Robert Kafchinski of Owings Mills, MD, Joseph Kafchinski and wife, Cara of Herndon, VA, James Kafchinski and fiancé, Mary Ellen Withrow of Baltimore, MD, Bradley Baker and husband, Matthew Powell of Chicago, IL, Amanda Baker Tolbert and husband, Chris of Greensboro, NC, Marcia Kafchinski Lundin and husband, Jeff of Springfield, VA, Garrett Kafchinski of Brooklyn, NY and Nathan Kafchinski of Unadilla, NY. He also had two great grandchildren, Alexandria and Hudson Tolbert.
He is also survived by one sister, Clara Strempek of Scranton, PA and several nieces, nephews and their families.
Stanley was the youngest of seven children. He was predeceased by his parents; four sisters, Helen Phillips, Alice Dobrosielski, Agnes Yeckinevich, and Theresa Konnick; one brother, Joseph Jr.
Friends may call on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta from 11am to 1 pm at which time the family will be in attendance. A prayer service will follow at 1pm at the funeral home.
