Shirley was born in Oneonta on October 2, 1922 the daughter of Clifford and Mildred (Butts) Anderson.
She was an honor graduate of Oneonta High School Class of 1940. Shirley was secretary of the National Honor Society and Captain of the Cheerleaders.
She attended Oneonta Normal School where she was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi Sorority.
On July 7, 1943 she married Newell Freeman Jones a marriage of 63 years until his passing in 2006.
An accomplished pianist, she was pianist for the Delhi Rebekah Lodge, Delhi Methodist Church Sunday School, and also the organist for many Delaware Academy graduation ceremonies.
Shirley was also the partner in the Clarke-Jones Dancing School for several years.
In 1957 she became Music Director at WDOS Radio in Oneonta where she also hosted two music shows.
Shirley was Study Hall supervisor at Delaware Academy and then was employed at the State University at Delhi as assistant to the Director of the College Union.
In later years, she worked with her friend Bette Braymer in the Delhi Specialty Shop where she was known for her beautifully decorated windows.
Shirley is survived by a daughter, Candace and David Robison of San Martin, California; son-in-law, Dr. Fred Rose of Lafayette; three grandsons, Bill and Kelly Rose of Syracuse, Dean and Christina Robison of Gilroy, California and Tracy and Amy Robison of Springfield, Oregon; and six great grandchildren. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Judith Rose, her parents, her sister, Jean Banta and her grandson, Fred Newell Rose.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 1:00 PM in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneida Street, Oneonta.
