She was born on February 28, 1951 in Walton, New York, a daughter of the late Robert G. and Beverly J. (Scutt) Johnson. Sharon married Wayne A. Alger on November 6, 1969 in Cooperstown. They celebrated 22 years of marriage until Wayne’s passing in May of 1992.
During Wayne’s service in the United States Air Force, they traveled extensively. Sharon and Wayne made a home in several communities through the years, including Otego and Oneonta, NY and Jamestown, NY, before settling down in Phoenix, AZ where she’s resided for these past 29 years.
Sharon will be sadly missed by many people as she drew great satisfaction from helping others. She spent many years working in the healthcare field, first as a respiratory therapist and then later as a caregiver assisting individuals with disabilities, mental health concerns and the elderly to live their best lives. In her spare time, she loved to read and paint. She also enjoyed making ceramics and watching movies.
Sharon is survived by her three children, Lisa A. (Mark) Melquist of Jamestown, NY, Paula L. Alger of Phoenix, AZ and Scott A. Alger of Pheonix, AZ; her four grandchildren, Tarin (Jason Harle) Cardone of Jamestown, NY, Tylor (Stephanie) Cardone of Jamestown, NY, Airman Brett (Amanda) Dehner of Dover Air Force Base, DE and Ariana Tinius of Mesa, AZ; and her two great grandchildren, Ronan Cardone of Jamestown, NY and Carson Dehner of Dover, DE. She is also survived by her six sisters currently residing in New York and by her many friends in the Phoenix, AZ area.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wayne A. Alger, and her brother, Elmer Johnson.
A graveside committal service will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 22, 2019 in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will receive friends and relatives from 1pm to 4pm at the Sixth Ward Athletic Club, 22 W Broadway, Oneonta, NY, following the service.
