Roger was born in Niagara Falls, New York on April 2, 1939 to Howard and Edna McPhail.
Roger graduated from La Salle High School, Niagara Falls, New York as a scholar athlete. He was both captain and pitcher of the varsity baseball team and captain and quarterback of the varsity football team.
After high school, Roger graduated with honors from Purdue University’s School of Pharmacy in West Lafayette, Indiana. He was fourth in his class.
After college, Roger achieved the rank of First Lieutenant in the Chemical Corp of the United States Army. It was at this time that he met his first wife Melda Faye O’Kelley McPhail, the mother of his three beloved sons: Rodney McPhail, Sean McPhail, and Darren McPhail. Melda passed away at the young age of 35 in 1976.
Roger is survived by his wife of 38 years, Linda (Parker Snyder), Roger’s sons: Rodney (Sara) McPhail, Sean McPhail, and Darren McPhail, two step-daughters: Christina (Sean) O’Sullivan and Deborah Dodd, and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Jones, of Binghamton, New York and brother, Donald McPhail, of Albany, New York and many nieces and nephews.
Roger and his brother Donald owned and operated McPhail’s Pharmacy in Oneonta, New York from 1966 to 1998.
Roger was a passionate collector of fine antiques with a special interest in the Empire period and Hudson River School paintings. Roger loved travel, playing golf, and fly fishing. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St, Oneonta, NY 13820, with Rev. Mark Montfort officiating.
Roger will be laid to rest privately, attended by family, in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
