He was born on November 7, 1946, in Oneonta to John Sobers Sr. and Norma (Rosenzweig) Sobers. He was raised in Oneonta.
After graduation from Oneonta High School in 1964, he served five tours of duty on The USS Mariano G. Vallejo Submarine while serving in The US Navy at Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
After his military service he took a job for several years with Bassett Hospital in their food services department, and during his time employed there he had the opportunity to train at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. For most of his career he worked at SUNY Oneonta as a Production Manager for Ancillary Services in the dining halls on campus, including Mills Hall and Wilsbach Hall before he retired.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, playing guitar, and operating his ham radios. He had a strong love for animals, and he was very devoted to his dogs and cats he had over the years.
Richard had a unique sense of humor, with an uncanny way of bringing levity to almost any situation he experienced in life. He will be remembered well for his great smile and his contagious laugh.
Richard is survived by his children Richard “Rick” Sobers Jr. (Deanne Decker) of Oneonta, NY, Geri Delamater (Jamie), Oneonta, NY, granddaughters Emma and Lindsay Delamater, siblings Jean Eckert of Oneonta, NY, David Sobers (Jean) of Albuquerque, NM, Kathy Powers of Ballston Lake, NY, and John Sobers Jr. (Cathy) of Oneonta, NY, and several nieces and nephews.
