Richard you are not forgotten. You are missed.

So hard to believe that such a kind hearted, intelligent, stubborn man has been called home.  He was always a great confidant and friend.  I was extremely sad to hear of his passing.  Assisting with the screen play writing of "Irrefutable Proof" and having the pleasure of the private viewing of this great film, I was honored.   I learned so much from him in the two years that I was in his company not only as a employee but as a friend.  The memories will never go away

A graduate of Princeton University, Department of Art and Archaeology, Castellane worked directly under world famous archaeologist Dr. Prof. Eric Sjoquist. Thereafter graduate work at Columbia University under Professors Meyer Schapiro and Julius Held. Then Assistant to Hans Schaefer (noted old master’s art dealer) where emphasis was on such old Masters as Rubens, Tiepolo, Rembrandt, Hals, etc. Opened gallery in New York City (Castellane Gallery) and became notable for having amongst the earliest exhibitions of Pop Art (William Kent indicated in Lucy Lippards book “Pop Art” as Pre 1960), Sensory Art (artist Jo Roman where objects could only be felt not seen), Op Art (artists such as Ben Cunningham etc.), Installation and Psychedelic Art (Yayoi Kusama), and one of earliest exhibitions of Earth artist Robert Smithson.

Castellane’s collections have been exhibited at numerous museums including those of Princeton University, the Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute, the Birmingham Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Galleries of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, etc.

Castellane has been commemorated as upon his artistic involvement with Yayoi Kusama’s creativity --- Castellane having held the two most significant exhibitions of her career (i.e. “The Peep Show” and “The Mirror Room”) --- exhibitions that have been recreated in numerous museum showings of Kusama, including The Museum of Modern Art, NYC, The Whitney Museum, NYC, and The Tate Gallery, London. Kusama is now deemed by many as one of the world’s most significant artists. Time Magazine recently picked her as the most significant Artist of the Twentieth Century. Also, the National Gallery in Washington is setting forth for a major exhibition of Kusama’s work which is actually no more than a “redo” of two exhibitions Castellane had of her work in the mid-1960’s. Some half a century earlier than the proposed National Gallery exhibition.
