Rich was born May 6, 1941 in Walton, NY the son of the late Kenneth and Edna (Rivenburg) Aikens. Rich grew up in Delhi and graduated from Delaware Academy and Central School in 1959. In high school he worked at Merrill’s Pharmacy which inspired him to go to Albany College of Pharmacy where he graduated in 1963. Rich worked as a pharmacist for 50 years. He began his career at Merrill’s Pharmacy and later worked at Rite Aid and Price Chopper.
On August 24, 1963 he married Elizabeth Burns. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
Rich served on the Delaware National Bank Board, the O’Connor Hospital Board and the Bassett Healthcare Network Board. He was also a member of the United Ministry Church in Delhi, acting as a lay speaker and serving on the Parish Council.
Rich was an avid NY Yankees fan and always enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He was known as a kind and generous man. People who knew him would often go to him for help or advice.
Rich is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; three children, Lori Aikens, Lynn (Scott) Glueckert and Robert (Tera) Aikens; six grandchildren, Chase, Kaleb, Jacob, Ava, Abigail and Owen. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Raymond.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Due to the current Covid guidelines masks must be worn and you may be asked to wait.
Graveside services will be held in the Hamden Cemetery, Hamden on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Donna Martin officiating. Donations in Rich’s memory can be made to Catholic Charities of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie Counties, 489 West Main Street, Cobleskill, New York 12043.
