She was born August 10, 1920 in Walton the daughter of the late Adelbert and Nora Adelaide (Smith) Barringer.
May grew up in Walton and was resident of Oneonta for most of her adult life.
On May 18, 1941, May married Judd C. Archer in Walton. Judd predeceased her on April 24, 1988.
As a young woman May worked at the Walton Reporter as a proof reader. In later life, along with raising a family, she worked as bookkeeper at Empire Livestock, the Oneonta YMCA, the Credit Bureau, and at the Oneonta HighSchool Cafeteria. Before retiring to Florida in winters, she delivered Senior Meals for Meals on Wheels beginning in West Oneonta then at Elm Park United Methodist Church and finally was a supervisor for the Nader Towers lunch program.
She enjoyed reading romance novels, her winters in Florida, camping at Gilbert Lake, talking and reading about the "good ole days" and putting together jigsaw puzzles. She was a great plain meal cook!
May was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, where she was active for many years in many groups including the choir, which she especially enjoyed.
May is survived by her three children, Russell J. Archer and his wife, Patricia of Oneonta, Paula Hughson of Liverpool and Nancy Bishop and her husband, Stanley of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Helen Allmandinger of Baldwinsville; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Donald Hughson; two brothers, William and Charles Barringer; and sister, Phebe Shubert.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut Street from 10:00 to 11:00AM. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00AM with the Reverend Olu Harding officiating. Burial will be held in the Walton Cemetery, Walton. Memorial donations in May’s name may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta or to the Cooperstown SPCA, 4845 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, New York 13326.
