Prof. Joseph C. Baldwin passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. Born May 25, 1937, in Cortland, NY, the son of Joseph M. and Alfreda O. (Jones) Baldwin, he attended several schools, including the Edgemont School near Scarsdale, and graduated from Bronxville High School in 1955. His undergraduate education was completed at the American University in Washington, D.C. and SUNY-Cortland. His graduate education included studies at the University of Arkansas, SUNY-Geneseo, Seton Hall University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Prof. Baldwin joined the English department faculty of SUNY-Oneonta in 1964, where, for forty-seven years, he taught courses in composition, American literature, English literature, world literature, and period courses. He retired in September, 2011.
For more than fifty years, Prof. Baldwin was associated with Rotary Camp Onseyawa, a Rotary-sponsored camp for challenged children, where he served as Senior Counselor and firearms instructor. He was a life member of B.P.O. Elks #1312 and a Past Governor of Oneonta Moose Lodge #465. In addition, he was a Benefactor Life Member of the National Rifle Association, a certified NRA firearms instructor, and an NRA range-safety officer.
Survivors include a sister, Hilma Crowfoot, several nephews, and many friends.
