She was born July 9, 1921 in Medford, Massachusetts, the daughter of John Joseph Hanley and Edith Jane (Corbett) Hanley. Jackie graduated from Katonah High School, Katonah, NY in June 1940 and attended college at Oneonta State Teachers College (now SUNY Oneonta). She graduated From OSTC in June 1944 and obtained her New York State Teacher’s Certificate. She married Leird I Pierce of Oneonta June 29, 1946. Jackie and Leird are lifelong residents of Oneonta.
Jackie was a career school teacher and loved her students. She taught elementary school classes at Laurens Central School, Unadilla School and Unatego School. She received her Master of Science in Education degree from SUNY Oneonta in June 1964 and served as a remedial reading specialist for many years.
Jackie retired from her teaching position in November 1977. She spent her retirement years enjoying her hobbies of painting with oils and photography. She and Leird traveled extensively throughout the east coast in their conversion van and spent several summers entertaining their granddaughter Christine.
She was preceded in death by brothers Edward, Richard and Robert and sisters Edith, Marie, Irene, Emily and Margaret.
She is survived by her husband Leird, sister Lorraine Hanley (Howard) Wallace of Homosassa Springs, FL, son John T (Cheryl) Pierce of Jones, OK, granddaughter Christine Jeanne (Ryan) Preda of Greensboro, NC and great-granddaughter Elli Nicole Preda of Greensboro, NC. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation and rosary for family and friends will be held Tuesday June 16, 2015 form 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta, NY. A funeral mass will be offered on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, 10:15 am at St Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut Street, Oneonta with Rev. David Mickiewiecz officiating.
Interment will take place after mass at Mt Calvary Cemetery.
