Gertrud endured a lot as a young child growing up in WWII Germany. She spent her adolescent years studying gymnastics in various sports clubs. Gertrud went to the Olympics trials as a gymnast in Helsinki in 1954.
She got her education as a bookkeeper.
It was always her dream to visit America and study English. She came to America in 1958 to live. Gertrud worked as a governess in the Newburgh area where she met her future husband, Richard Sager through a mutual friend. They were married January 8th, 1959, where they settled in Newburg, NY.
Gertrud was very talented with macramé, crochet and making many German cookies. Her athleticism carried well into her 70's where he loved to ski, roller skate and ice skate.
Gertrud was predeceased by her husband August 2019.
She enjoyed a peaceful life at her home in Oneonta NY, where she played many card games, dominoes and bingo with her friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her son, Richard Sager and his wife Ellen of Minnesott Beach, NC; a daughter, Sonja Schoonmaker and her husband Scott of Grand Isle Fla. She had 4 grandchildren, Jay Sager, Kelty, Emmeline, and Alycia Schoonmaker.
