He was born on September 3, 1942 in Oneonta, the son of the late Robert L. Holbrook and Alta F. Larson.
Gene retired after 22 years of service from the City of Oneonta Police Department in 1988. There he was a member of the Oneonta Police Benevolent Association. He also worked part time as a conservation officer for NY State. After a brief retirement, he went on to work for Country Club Motors in Oneonta as a service manager and Central Garage for the City of Oneonta.
Gene enjoyed the outdoors and loved spending time at his summer residence on Canadarago Lake with family and friends. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and an all-around animal lover and conservationist.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rosemary Holbrook, of Otego; his four children, Teresa Holbrook (Jeffrey Duplacy) of Oneonta, Mary Staab (Rudy) of Roxbury, Regina Wagner (Jeffrey) of Vestal, and Michael Holbrook of Savannah, GA; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; his siblings, Claude “Bob” R. Holbrook (Hilda) of Otego, Peggy Lu Fay-Bonds of East Sonoma, CA, and Corinne A. Kelly of Mesa, AZ; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a daughter, Jacqueline Dinallo.
Friends are invited to greet the family beginning at 10 am on Friday, October 28, 2022, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, where a memorial service will take place immediately following at 11 am. Pastor Mitch Spring will officiate.
Burial will follow in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.
In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 5082-5088, NY-28, Cooperstown, NY 13326 and Helios Care, 297 River Street Service Rd, Oneonta, NY 13820.
