Effie was born August 17, 1931 in Franklin to the late Minnie and Frank Doring. She grew up with her brother on the family farm in Treadwell.
Effie graduated valedictorian of her small class at Kellogg Central School in 1949. After attending the SUNY Delhi secretarial program, Effie was employed by Elmore’s Feed Company.
She married Alston Wheeler in November 1952 and they raised their five daughters together in Treadwell. After her children were in school, Effie was employed as a bookkeeper and office manager at O’Connor Hospital where she worked until her retirement and made many lasting friendships.
In retirement, Effie moved to Sidney and volunteered at the local library, hospital, and animal shelter. She was an active member of the United Congregational Church in Sidney. She traveled the transcontinental railway through Canada, and toured the United Kingdom and Europe. Effie was an avid reader and always had a book by her chair. She was a talented folk painter and quilter. She could often be found on a long walk or leading exercise classes at her church. Effie was known for her dry and witty sense of humor which was enjoyed by all who knew her.
Effie most recently resided at Fox Nursing Home until her death. The family extends a sincere thank you to all the staff at Fox Nursing Home who gave our Mom and Grandmother excellent and loving care.
