Dave was called home to be with the Lord after a short reoccurrence battle with cancer. Dave was a 20 plus year cancer survivor and the family is thankful they were given the gift of twenty additional years with Dave.
Dave grew up in West Oneonta and has been a life- long resident of the Oneonta area.
Dave recently retired from the Oneonta City Schools System after over 30 years of service. He enjoyed working there and made many friends from his work family.
Dave was an avid canoe enthusiast. He was a regular participant in the Annual General Clinton Canoe Regatta – 70 miles. Dave had several canoe partners over the years including John Harrison with whom they took first place more than once. Dave loved being outdoors taking special interest in hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, campfires and grilling outdoors. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Dave is survived by the love of his life, Beth, for 35 years and her parents (Fran and Marty Northrup) Dave has two daughters – Melissa (Rob) Oakley, and Carah (Kevin) Manning. Granddaughters Aubrey and Kierah and one grandson Connor. Dave is also survived by his two sisters, Joyce Woodrow (Gary) and Janet Speranzi-Cannon (Larry). Dave is also survived by several Aunts, Uncles and cousins, nephews, and nieces. Dave also is survived by many close friends.
Dave was predeceased by his Mom and Dad (Laura and Frank Knapp), Grandparents on both sides and several Aunts, Uncles and cousins and his beloved pet dog Roxy and cat (Knapper) that he adopted after Dave’s father passed.
Friends and Family may call from 3-4 pm on Friday, January 5, 2018 at the Elm Park Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut Street, Oneonta. A short memorial service will begin at 4 pm.
A celebration of Life will occur in the spring around the Canoe Regatta time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
