Barbara was born on February 13, 1932 in Northampton, Massachusetts to Mary (Cote) and John Lucas Sr. On January 16, 1956, she married Ernest E. Sweeney, Sr. in Canaan, New York.
She moved to the area in 1961, and in 1983 moved to Jacksonville, Florida. In 1990, she and Ernie moved to Kernersville, North Carolina, and then in 1996 they moved back to Oneonta. While in Oneonta that first time, she babysat for many, many children for twenty plus years. For the last seven years, she lived with her daughter, Marilyn and son-in-law, Bill.
Barbara was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta.
She loved to knit, crochet, and sew as well as being an avid reader. She was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Barbara is survived by her children: James and Ronda of Otego, Marilyn and Bill Waterhouse of Oneonta, Ernest Jr. and Tammy Sweeney of Davenport, Mary Walser of Syracuse, David Sweeney of Jacksonville, Florida, Brian Sweeney of St. Augustine, Florida, Matthew and Amanda Sweeney of Palm Coast, Florida, and Randall and Kim Lockwood of Watertown, New York (a grandson who resided with them for a number of years). She is also survived by her beloved cat, Baby.
She is also survived by her siblings: Elaine Haney, O’Fallon, Illinois, Faith and James Rodman, Saugerties, New York, brother John Lucas Jr., North Las Vegas, Nevada, brother-in-law, John Fournier, Northampton, Massachusetts, sister-in-law Sandra and William Kicza, Oldsmar, Florida, 16 grandchildren, 32, great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernie in 2010, and recently her sister, Jacqueline Fournier.
Friends may call on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St, Oneonta, from 11am until service time a 1 pm when a funeral service will take place, with Rev. David Rockwell officiating.
Interment will be in the spring at Ouleout Valley Cemtery, Franklin.
