She was born on 11 September 1930 in Southampton, New York, to William Henry Afterman and Anna Mary Hudak Afterman. Barbara grew up in Westhampton Beach, New York, the youngest of six children.
She was trained at Travens Dressmaking and worked as a professional seamstress in New York City.
Barbara was married to Alfred Francois Massari on 28 January in 1956 in Vahalla, New York. They lived in Paris, France; Manhattan, New York; and Westhampton Beach, New York, before settling in Milford Center in 1965.
The couple had two children, Odette Collins and Claude Massari. Barbara did sewing alterations at Matthews’ clothing store as well as working at Drogen’s, both in Oneonta. She is survived by a granddaughter, Allison Collins, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Barbara’s friends for their love and care during her final weeks. Her parents, siblings, husband, and children have all preceded her in death. To honor Barbara’s wishes, there will be no funeral service or calling hours.
