Kay was born in Omaha, July 18, 1937 as Kathleen Marie McGinty. She grew up in South Omaha and graduated from St Mary High School in 1955. She attended the University of Nebraska Omaha. In 1960, she married Richard Miller and started a family. Kay was an active volunteer with interest in helping children and her community. She was a room mother for Crestridge Elementary School, a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a volunteer for the Child Saving Institute (CSI), Lauritzen Gardens, and Junior League. She often volunteered with others from Christ the King Catholic Church in Omaha, serving families in bereavement. She had a keen interest in home décor, fashion, and gardening. She especially enjoyed hosting friends and family and surprising her guests with beautiful, celebratory table settings and decorations. Kay was an avid gardener. In addition to her volunteer work at Lauritzen Gardens, she had an extensive garden at her home, she was active in the Loveland Garden Club and even took a part-time job at Lanoha’s Nursery, primarily to learn about, and help tend, the flowers and plants. Kay also had a fascination with the art and beauty of other cultures. After the unexpected passing of her beloved husband in 2002, she decided it was time to travel, and she did so extensively. She visited Europe including Russia, China, Vietnam, Africa, Israel, Egypt, Iceland, Australia, Canada and Mexico, to name a few. She truly valued the opportunity to experience new places with her friends, or her family. Kay was a loving and devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt to her family. She was devout in her faith and lived a full and active life.
Kathleen (Kay) Miller passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 23, 2022 in Omaha, at the age of 84. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Marie McGinty, her husband of 42 years, Richard Miller, and her brother John (Jack) McGinty Jr. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Roland Fortner; her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Suzan Miller; her grandchildren Jack Fortner and Lily Fortner; her sister Mary Benda, and her brother Jerry McGinty; as well as nieces and nephews and friends.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Friday, July 1 at 2pm at Westlawn-Hillcrest. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Child Saving Institute of Omaha or Lauritzen Gardens of Omaha.
