Jim died peacefully in Omaha Nebraska on January 22, 2017. He was 83.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Jim graduated from Lawrence College in 1956 with a degree in art history. He obtained his teaching license for Art, English, Speech and General Science in 1958. At Lawrence Jim was in the Air Force ROTC program, played football, ran track and was captain of the swim team. After college, he married the mother of his children, Karen (Andersen) Moore and served his country as a Captain in the Air Force,and was a bomber pilot and weapons controller. After the Air Force, Jim was in marketing and sales for Krause Milling in Milwaukee and for Nebraska Consolidated MIlls in Omaha before continuing his public service with the Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C. He served as the Department's representative to NATO and a member of the USDA negotiation team traveling to Cairo, Alexandria, Rome, Athens, London and Paris. Jim received the USDA's Distinguished Service Award for his efforts in expanding exports of wheat, flour and rice for the World Food Program. He later was named Assistant to the Deputy Administrator for Commodity Operations and then served as Director of the USDA Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Licensing Authority Division.
In 1983, on a special detail to Kansas City, Jim met his loving wife Barbara. They returned to D.C. until their retirement to her home town of Omaha Nebraska. An avid golfer (14 handicap), Jim worked as a golf marshall and played as many rounds as weather permitted. He was passionate about Alcoholics Anonymous and educating and supporting others with addictions. He had attained 25 years of sobriety and his family was so proud of him.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John M. and Esther (Leonard) Schlick ; and cousin Jerris Leonard. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Stepanek) Schlick; his children Kathryn (Schlick) Bomier (Terry), Susan (Schlick) Karaskiewicz, James Schlick (Trisha), Amy (Schlick) Andersen; and Barbara's daughter, Tami Koeppen (Phil); grandchildren Lauren Forseth (Eric), Trey Bomier, Shaun Hilgart (Amanda), Madeline Bomier, Chloe Karaskiewicz, Luke Andersen, Keira and Luke Schlick, Barbara's grandchildren Rick and Mandy Koeppen; his great grandchildren Hayden and Brynlee Forseth; his brother John Schlick (Patsy) and beloved dog, Molly.
