Henry “Hank” Nunn, Jr. was born in Ayden, North Carolina on May 21, 1928. As a youth he played sports and held various jobs around town. In 1944, he graduated from J.W. Ormond High School. Following graduation, he worked in a grocery warehouse with his father, Henry C. Nunn before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1947. He served a total of 30 years in the Air Force and served his country in locations around the world, including Germany, England, and the Philippines. He was a Vietnam War veteran, stationed at Cam Ranh Bay air base during the conflict. Stateside, he was stationed at Offutt AFB in Nebraska, Homestead AFB in Florida, Ent AFB in Colorado, and Edwards AFB in California. Following his retirement from the service with the rank of Master Sergeant, Hank settled in Denver, Colorado where he lived for 35 years. He moved to Omaha to be closer to family in 2012.
Hank enjoyed biking, photography, jazz, and driving like a maniac. He was a great conversationalist and never too busy to stop and have a word. He was a sharp dresser who took pride in his appearance. He kept a clean home and was very organized. There was a space for everything. He loved to travel and enjoyed long drives through the countryside. Hank left this realm exactly two weeks shy of his 92nd birthday. He was fit, healthy, and independent for virtually all this time. He was always athletic and enjoyed watching and participating in sports and other physical activities. In his later years, he rode his bicycle religiously and could be often seen in the parks and on the trails near his home. He loved his family and was happy when he was able to attend family gatherings and reunions.
Hank was called home on May 7, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Calven Nunn and Nicey Jane Darden Nunn, and his brother, Gene Waldol Nunn.
