June 24, 1923 to August 3, 2024
Ethel Mae Grill and her twin sister, Helen, entered this world on June 24, 1923, in Wakefield Michigan. Ethel described the arrival of the twins as a "surprise" for her parents. The twins loved the outdoors and even challenged themselves to sleep on the screened-in-porch every night of a winter in upper peninsula Michigan. They met their goal! Ethel attended Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan to study Chemistry. She went on to earn a Masters Degree in Microbiology at MSU. In East Lansing, she met a handsome, young veteran named Sam Grill. They married there on December 18, 1948. Sam and Essie settled in Omaha and she began work at the Old Methodist Hospital on Cumings Street in the Microbiology Department. Essie worked at Methodist Hospital so long that the hospital had time to build the new building on 84th Street and then add on to the new building. Over the years, she identified many pathogens to help people recover from illnesses.
Essie continued her love of the outdoors with her hobbies. She loved watching birds, finding wildflowers and later, photographing both. Many of her photos won awards in nature shows. As Sam became ill, she kept active by walking and reading. There was always an "in-progress" 1000 piece puzzle on the card table. Her brain was always active. Because of her love life and family, Essie met her goal to live to 100 and of course, went just a bit more!
