Marks - Stanley P. Massey, 84, was called home on Monday, September 13, 2010. He was a long time resident of Marks. Son of James Benjamin and Louise Massey, he grew up in the Greenleaf community. During WWII, Stanley served in the European Theater (U.S. Army) with the 18th Infantry Regiment, Company B; he received a Purple Heart for combat wounds received at the Battle of the Bulge. As a returning war veteran he attended the Southern College of Watchmaking in Memphis. He waived combat disability and reenlisted to serve in the Korean War, where he repaired watches for the Army. He settled in Marks in the early 50’s and opened Massey’s Jewelry, which operated on Main Street for over 25 years. He also worked for the US Postal Service, where he worked his way from part time temporary to postmaster before retiring. He was married for 28 years to the late Betty Powell, of Crowder. Stanley was a member of the United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Forty & Eight. He later married his second wife, the late Marvlene Mangram of Caraway, AR. He spent his retirement years in Caraway and Mountain View, AR. before coming to live at the Veterans Home in Oxford. Stanley was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Hudson, and brother, James Benjamin (Ben) Massey. He is survived by his brother, Elmer Massey, of Senatobia, MS and sister, Vonne Mynatt, of Heber Springs, AR. He also leaves two daughters, Sandra Walker, of Chattanooga, and Beverly Newman of Memphis; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Visitation is today, Wednesday, September 15, 5-8 p.m. at the Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch. Burial will be Thursday, September 16, 11 a.m. at the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Forest Hill/Irene Rd. outside Memphis.
